Bollywood box-office report of the week

It is going to be almost an open week at the box–office with Rajesh Khanna's WAFAA being the solo release, but the film is going to achieve absolutely nothing. The reason for the 'no release' and the inevitable non–performance of WAFAA will be the week old release that (ironically!) pays tribute to the former superstar in one of its songs! The film in question is Aditya Chopra's latest directorial venture, RAB NE BANA DI JODI.
Evaluating the performance of last Friday's Aditya Chopra directed Shah Rukh Khan starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI, the film proves that the magic of the DDLJ and MOHABBATEIN team is still intact. Released at 94 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Yash Raj Film Distributors, the film had a very good opening (after a slowish morning). Outside of Bombay the opening ranged from good to excellent (barring C.P. Berar and Bihar). Trade feels that RAB NE BANA DI JODI is a hit film. It will meet with initial resistance from a section of the audience (and trade) but will ultimately settle down to becoming a hit (how big being the only question!) on the strength of the novelty of its Indian subject, hit music and Shah Rukh Khan's superlative performance. The moderately budgeted (for an SRK project) film has already netted 25 crores plus during its first weekend from India. In the Overseas, RAB NE BANA DI JODI has performed remarkably, grossing $600,687 (print average $10,011) from UK and an actual $911,771 (print average $10,985) from 83 cinemas in the US. The film has also worked wonderfully in some of the other non Hindi film areas. In the Overseas too the question is how big a success RAB NE BANA DI JODI will be while competing with some of Shah Rukh Khan's own (previous) records!
All the releases of 5th December fared badly. The worse fate awaited MEERABAI NOT OUT, which got out without scoring a single run followed by OH, MY GOD!! The films that fared somewhat better were DIL KABADDI followed by MAHARATHI. Let's check out the individual runs.
The next innings for Mandira Bedi was worse than her last solo venture (SHAADI KE LADDOO) as Pritish Nandy Communications' MEERABAI NOT OUT could barely touch 7 lakhs from India and is a washout.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd.'s OH, MY GOD!! turned out to be a shocker netting barely 30 lakhs in its opening week from India. The film is a trade disaster.
The best performance (comparatively) came from the Rahul Bose, Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen, and Soha Ali Khan's DIL KABADDI, just like we had predicted. The film managed 1 crore from Bombay, 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.15 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.50 lakhs from Nasik, 38 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.25 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 9.60 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.60 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.20 lakhs from Guwahati, 5 lakhs from Nagpur, 4.15 lakhs from Indore, 2.30 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.05 lakhs from Jodhpur, 12.25 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.35 lakhs from Aurangabad. Despite dull collections, DIL KABADDI manages to touch 3.75 crores from India, mainly due to its multiplex run. Unfortunately, DIL KABADDI will still be a losing fare for all concerned.
Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.'s MAHARATHI, based on a Gujarati stage play, has found negligible appreciation from the audience. And this despite a superb performance from Paresh Rawal, who is the life and soul of the film. During the week MAHARATHI collected 46 lakhs from Bombay, 16.05 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.25 lakhs from Rajkot, 1 lakh from Nasik, 18.25 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.35 lakhs from Noida, 1.45 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.55 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.35 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.15 lakhs from Nagpur and 3 lakhs from Hyderabad. In its opening week from India, MAHARATHI has netted a below par 1.75 crores from India and has failed commercially.
Abhay Deol's OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! that was showing some signs of a fight till its second weekend; fell heavily from the second Monday. The film collected 30 lakhs from Bombay, 3.75 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 19 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.65 lakhs from Noida, 1.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2 lakhs from Lucknow, 10.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.60 lakhs from Indore and 3 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 1.90 crores, OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! has netted 6 crores in two weeks from India. The film is now a below average fare, after accounting for non–theatrical rights.
Meanwhile Chitrangada Singh's comeback venture with Sanjay Suri and Sharman Joshi, SORRY BHAI, goes from bad to worse with another 15 lakhs. The film ends its run having netted a shockingly poor 1.40 crores in two weeks from India and turns out to a disaster of epidemic proportions.
Checking out Subhash Ghai's Anil, Salman, Zayed and Katrina starrer YUVVRAAJ, its numbers dwindled from bad to worse, collecting 5 lakhs from Bombay, 1.60 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.35 lakhs from Jamnagar, 7.25 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.35 lakhs from Noida, 1 lakh from Ghaziabad, 3.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.50 lakhs from Agra, 1 lakh from Aligarh, 1.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Jaipur and 2.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. Netting another 75 lakhs, YUVVRAAJ has a poor 16.25 crores in three weeks from India. The film is a disaster and has also been rejected in the Overseas with poor to ordinary grosses of $314,876 from UK and $570,090 from the US.
Our last entry of this week is Karan Johar's Taran Mansukhani directed Abhishek, John and Priyanka starrer, DOSTANA. It is the only film that has somewhat managed to hold on in the multiplexes of big centres. During its latest run DOSTANA collected 45 lakhs from Bombay, 5.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 25 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.65 lakhs from Noida, 2.05 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.60 lakhs from Lucknow, 6.35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.45 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.30 lakhs from Jaipur, 16 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.50 lakhs from Aurangabad. DOSTANA manages another 2.25 crores and has netted 44.25 crores in four weeks from India. The film though is still an average plus fare but may just about manage to cross over to the next higher classification. The film has grossed impressively from the Overseas with $1,422,757 from UK and $1,243,910 from the US.
