Bollywood box-office report of the week

With no significant release till March 7th, the focus remains on the February 15 release, Ashutosh Gowariker's JODHAA AKBAR. After a good first weekend, the movie fell significantly from Monday onwards, but again had a rewarding second weekend. The makers have come forth with a 10-day total of around 35 crores from India, and that takes the UTV project into the safety zone. Checking out the first week numbers, JODHAA AKBAR collected 4.50 crores from Bombay, 92.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.85 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 13 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.60 lakhs from Jamnagar, 6 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Porbandar, 1.45 lakhs from Surendranagar, 1 lakh each from Junagarh and Dwarka, 1.05 lakhs from Morbi, 3 lakhs from Gandhidham, 2.25 lakhs Bhuj, 1.75 lakhs from Adipur, 4.20 lakhs from Solapur, 12.65 lakhs from Nasik, 1.95 crores from Delhi city, 34.15 lakhs from Noida, 44.20 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 27.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 5.20 lakhs from Agra, 8.60 lakhs from Meerut, 4.40 lakhs from Moradabad, 2.10 lakhs from Bareilly, 4.45 lakhs from Aligarh, 34.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 11.60 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 22 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.40 lakhs from Amravati, 2.05 lakhs from Akola, 3.40 lakhs from Raipur, 1.25 lakhs from Wardha, 31.30 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Sehore, 1.20 lakhs from Ujjain, 2.25 lakhs from Guawahati, 75.65 lakhs from Calcutta and 87 lakhs from Hyderabad. In its first week, the Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai starrer has netted exactly 24.75 crores from India. And that given all the impediments is a creditable effort. JODHAA AKBAR is already a superhit in the Overseas, grossing a superb $2,505,703 from the US and good $1,335,677 from UK.
Rohit Jugraj's SUPER STAR has crashed out totally in its second week. The week saw 6 lakhs from Bombay, 1.28 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Rajkot, 1 lakh from Delhi city, 1.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad and 1 lakh from Hyderabad. Adding a paltry 25 lakhs, SUPER STAR has netted a poor 2.65 crores in two weeks from India and is huge flop.
The much-appreciated MITHYA from Planman Motion Pictures also fell quite heavily. One feels that with an open week or with a less formidable opponent, as compared to the might of JODHAA AKBAR, it could have once again gone the BHEJA FRY way for the director Rajat Kapoor. Coming to the numbers, MITHYA collected 20.50 lakhs from Bombay, 3.65 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 12.75 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.25 lakhs from Noida, 2.75 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.30 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.70 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Faridabad and 2 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 1.15 crores, MITHYA has netted around 4.75 crores in two weeks from India. Given its rock bottom budget and selling prices, MITHYA is almost an average in India.
Meanwhile Rohit Shetty's SUNDAY seems to be ending its run, but manages to take itself to safety. During the week, SUNDAY collected 5.60 lakhs from Bombay, 3.40 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.40 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.20 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.80 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Nagpur and 6.30 lakhs from Jaipur. With around 50 lakhs, SUNDAY has netted around 20.50 crores in four weeks from India. The Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer can at best be rated as a below average fare. SUNDAY has fared much better than Ajay Devgan's last release HALLA BOL in the UK, grossing a decent $387,898, especially in view of the cast and the makers.
Aamir Khan's directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR takes a huge fall for the first time. But that is in its 9th week. The film collects 11 lakhs from Bombay, 2.05 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 6.15 lakhs from Delhi city, 1 lakh from Noida, 1.05 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.55 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.80 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.20 lakhs from Indore, 1.15 lakhs from Bhopal and 5.20 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 60 lakhs during its latest outing, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has so far netted an impressive 59.20 crores in nine weeks from India. The Darsheel, Aamir and Tisca starrer is a blockbuster hit in India. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has performed extremely well in the US, grossing $1,223,869, but has under-performed in the UK with a gross of $679,463. But given the overall collections in the overseas circuit, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is a hit there.
In the end let's checkout Anees Bazmee's WELCOME, the movie that released with Aamir Khan's TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. The movie added another 25 lakhs and has now netted a very impressive 74.50 crores in nine weeks from India. The Feroz, Anil, Nana, Akshay and Katrina starrer is a blockbuster hit in India. WELCOME is also a super hit in the overseas circuit.
