Bollywood box-office report of the week

Next Friday will see the release of Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajay Devgan, Vidya Balan and Pankaj Kapoor starrer, HALLA BOL and E. Niwas's Mithun, Nikhil Dwivedi , Amrita Rao and Anupam Kher starrer, MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES. With RAMA RAMA KYA HAI DRAMAA having pulled out, an interesting clash is in the offing between the the lavishly mounted and well made HALLA BOL and the interesting looking and well publicised MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES. Once again one feels that the older releases, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and WELCOME will prove to be a handful for both the new releases.
All the small releases of last Friday namely, PHIR TAUBA TAUBA, MANTHAN EK KASHMAKASH and HUMNE JEENA SEEKH LIYA etc. have opened to dismal houses with obvious outcomes.
The latest venture from the Bhatts' camp, Raju Khan's Tushar Jalota, Mrinalini Sharma starrer SHOWBIZ is a total loss-making film. In the opening week the movie collected 5.50 lakhs from Bombay, 1.05 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Delhi city, 1.15 lakhs from Nagpur and 2.40 lakhs from Hyderabad. With just about 25 lakhs in its first week from India, SHOWBIZ is another trade disaster.
The other release of the same week, Anurag Kashyap's animated RETURN OF HANUMAN has also poor collections to show but is much better than SHOWBIZ. The movie collected 33 lakhs from Bombay, 5 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.10 lakhs from Nasik, 13.35 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.20 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.80 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.10 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.10 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.60 lakhs from Indore and 1.10 lakhs from Jaipur. RETURN OF HANUMAN ends its first week netting around 1.35 crores from India and looks set to be loss making venture for its makers, Percept Picture Company.
Coming to last year's releases, Aamir Khan's directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, the movie is superb in the multiplexes. However, it continues to do ordinary in C.P. Berar, C.I. and Rajasthan. In its second week TAARE ZAMEEN PAR collected 2.20 crores from Bombay, 43.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.10 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.80 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 1.30 lakhs from Solapur, 8.25 lakhs from Nasik, 2.10 crores from Delhi city, 26 lakhs from Noida, 33 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 20 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.30 lakhs from Aligarh, 2.60 lakhs from Agra, 5.40 lakhs from Meerut, 2 lakhs from Moradabad, 1.80 lakhs from Bareilly, 16.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 9.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.35 lakhs from Panipat, 15 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.45 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.40 lakhs from Amravati, 8.40 lakhs from Raipur, 1.70 lakhs from Bhilai, 1.15 lakhs from Durg, 17 lakhs from Indore, 1 lakh from Sehore, 5.15 lakhs from Bhopal, 17.50 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.75 lakhs (gross) from  Ajmer, 3.55 lakhs from Guwahati, 70 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.70 lakhs from Aurangabad and 51.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. With around 13 crores in its second week, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has so far netted around 30 crores in two weeks from India. Given the distributors cost (including that for print and publicity), the Darsheel, Aamir and Tisca starrer is now a clean hit in India and is all set to move higher in the weeks to come. In the Overseas, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has had a mixed performance. It has done quite well in the US grossing $1,104,337 but has underperformed in the UK with a gross of only $503,255. But given the overall collections in the overseas circuit, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is a hit there also.
Meanwhile TAARE ZAMEEN PAR's release partner, Anees Bazmee's critically panned WELCOME continues to rule the box-office and uniformly across all circuits, at both single screens and multiplexes. The collection fell by about 35-40 percent but it still manages fantastic shares. Trade attributes the fall to the big collections in the first week. During the week WELCOME collected 3.70 crores from Bombay, 94 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.50 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 15.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 6.10 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.75 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 2 lakhs from Porbandar, 1.30 lakhs from Surendarnagar, 1 lakh from Morbi, 1.50 lakhs from Bhuj, 3.35 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.45 lakhs from Adipur, 3.65 lakhs from Solapur, 10 lakhs from Nasik, 2 crores from Delhi city, 25 lakhs from Noida, 50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 31.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.50 lakhs from Agra, 12.50 lakhs from Meerut, 5.70 lakhs from Moradabad, 2.60 lakhs from Bareilly, 3.10 lakhs from Aligarh, 1.30 lakhs from Mathura, 19 lakhs from Gurgaon, 15.30 lakhs from Faridabad, 3 lakhs from Panipat, 26.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.40 lakhs in Jabalpur, 4.50 lakhs from Amravati, 3.15 lakhs from Akola, 12.75 lakhs from Raipur, 3.70 lakhs from
Bhilai, 1 lakh from Durg, 1.45 lakhs from Wardha, 1.15 lakhs from Rajnandgaon, 2.85 lakhs from Chandrapur, 1.10 lakhs from Yavatmal, 1 lakh from Sagar, 21 lakhs from Indore, 2.40 lakhs from Sehore, 1.55 lakhs from Ujjain, 45 lakhs from Jaipur, 6.85 lakhs (gross) from Ajmer, 3.75 lakhs from Bikaner, 2.30 lakhs from Guwahati, 65.75 lakhs from Calcutta, 5 lakhs from Aurangabad and 38 lakhs from Hyderabad. Netting another 21 crores, the Feroze, Anil, Nana, Akshay and Katrina starrer has a total of 56 crores in just two weeks from India. Given the distribution cost (including the cost of print and publicity) WELCOME is now a hit plus in India and is sure to move to a higher classification within the next couple of weeks. In the Overseas, WELCOME has already been declared a superhit grossing $1,667,087 in the UK and about $ 1 million (as per Studio 18) though the US numbers are still to be audited / validated.
Coming to Yash Raj's AAJA NACHLE, the movie inches towards the 17 crore mark by adding another 10 lakhs in its fifth week. In the Overseas, the movie has done extremely well in the UK grossing $882,747 but is so-so in the US with $484,108. Given the fact that the Madhuri Dixit starrer, AAJA NACHLE has been distributed worldwide by the producers themselves, it will be a coverage film for them. In fact, once the non theatrical rights are taken into account, it is bound to bring in a small amount of profit for them.
In the end, let us check out Farah Khan's OM SHANTI OM. After completing 50 days and also becoming the biggest grosser in Bollywood history, the movie marches on. During its latest outing, OM SHANTI OM collected 2.30 lakhs from Bombay, 1.35 lakhs from Delhi city and 4.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 20 lakhs, the movie has so far netted 85.80 crores in eight weeks from India. It is definite that the Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade and Deepika Padukone starrer will end its run with more than 86 crores from India. OM SHANTI OM, an ATBB (All time blockbuster) in India, is already a blockbuster in the Overseas grossing more than 36 crores (equivalent Indian Rupees).
