Bollywood box-office report of the week

The coming Friday will see Kumar Mangat's Ashwani Dhir directed comedy flick, ONE TWO THREE. Featuring Sunil Shetty, Tusshar Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Upen Patel, Esha Deol, Sameera Reddy, Tanisha Mukherjee and Neetu Chandra, the film may be well made but has no major star to boast of. And that may reduce its box-office potential to a large extent. However, what goes in favour of the movie is its reasonable budget and selling price.
The fate of Radha Pushpa Entertainments 26TH JULY AT BARISTA was clear from the first show itself. Netting less than 10 lakhs from India during its first week, the film is an unmitigated disaster.
As was obvious, last Friday's only new release, Abbas-Mustan's much-awaited RACE was off to a huge start, across India and Overseas. Produced by Tips Films and starring Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy, RACE got the benefit of the holiday weekend and netted a very impressive 22 crores in three days. Trade expects that RACE will get maximum returns from Bombay circuit, South, Delhi and Punjab. While on the Overseas, RACE grossed an excellent $728,938 from the UK with a huge print average of $15,846 and a good $802,254 from the US but with a smaller print average of $8,356.
Coming to Subhash Ghai's Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah and Anurag Sinha starrer, BLACK & WHITE, the film fell by quite bit and did not quite draw the advantage of tax-exemptions in Delhi and Maharashtra. During the week, BLACK & WHITE collected 33 lakhs from Bombay, 7.70 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh each from Jamnagar and Nasik, 29 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.40 lakhs from Noida, 4.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.30 lakhs from Aligarh and 5.25 lakhs from Gurgaon. Getting another 1.80 crores, BLACK & WHITE has so far netted around 5.50 crores in two weeks from India. It appears that the low budget film may just about crawl to safety in India. The film has already been rejected in the UK with a poor gross of $88,627.
Meanwhile, Ashutosh Gowariker's Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer, JODHAA AKBAR, has another very stable week to show. The film manages to go on against all odds. Checking out the numbers, JODHAA AKBAR collected 75 lakhs from Bombay, 25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.10 lakhs each from Himmatnagar and Bhavnagar, 4.15 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.55 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.25 lakhs from Nasik, 47 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.35 lakhs from Noida, 6.55 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.65 lakhs from Kanpur, 9.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Bareilly, 8 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.15 lakhs from Guwahati, 5.20 lakhs from Nagpur, 8.10 lakhs from Indore and 19.10 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 4.40 crores, JODHAA AKBAR has so far netted around 58 crores in five weeks from India. The UTV venture is now a clear hit in India (superhit in Bombay, Delhi-U.P. and South) and has the legs to carry on for a while more. JODHAA AKBAR is already a blockbuster in the Overseas, grossing an extra ordinary $3,397,218 from the US and a very impressive $1,982,552 from the UK.
Rajat Kapoor's shoestring budget MITHYA manages to trickle in some more lakhs! The film collected 1.10 lakhs from Bombay, 4.35 lakhs from Delhi city, and 1.05 lakhs from Ghaziabad and slightly less than a lakh from Gurgaon. Adding another 15 lakhs in its sixth week, MITHYA has so far netted around 5.10 crores from India. Already an above average fare in India, MITHYA continues its impressive run.
In the end let us once again conclude through Aamir Khan's directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. The film continues to bring in the collections, though on the lower side now. Checking out the numbers, the film collects 5 lakhs from Bombay, 2 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5.75 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.25 lakhs from Gurgaon and 1.65 lakhs from Nagpur. Netting another 25 lakhs, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has so far 60.75 crores to show from India. The Darsheel, Aamir and Tisca starrer is a blockbuster in India and is also a hit in the Overseas, with US being quite good.
