This Friday's exciting new releases include Karan Johar's Tarun Mansukhani directed DOSTANA and Vinay Pathak's Shashant Shah directed DASVIDANIYA. While the Abhishek, John, Priyanka and Bobby (special appearance) starrer DOSTANA will embark on a good start, more so in the cities, the Vinay, Ranvir, Rajat and Neha venture will appeal to the niche multiplex audience of A and B centres. Both DOSTANA and DASVIDANIYA apparently appear to be on a safe pitch thanks to some super publicity and honest teasers. In case of DASVIDANIYA, its very reasonable 3.5 crore budget is an added advantage. The third release of the week is actor–producer Kamal Khan's DESH DROHI which has created enough buzz.

As we know, last Friday's new releases were EMI and EK VIVAAH.... AISA BHI. While the Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd. And Popcorn Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd.'s Sanjay Dutt starrer EMI was released at 81 cinemas of Bombay thru Raksha Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, Rajshri Productions Pvt. Ltd.'s EK VIVAAH.... AISA BHI was released by the producers with a limited number of 5 prints in Bombay. As far as the opening battle goes, EMI had dull to shockingly low opening across India. The Rajshri venture EK VIVAAH.... AISA BHI saw an average opening in Bombay and an encouraging start at the smaller centres. Trade predicts that EMI will meet with a poor fate at the ticket window while EK VIVAAH.... AISA BHI may have taken a slow start, but it has the potential to grow from strength to strength. And there are indications of that already. In the Overseas, a limited release strategy for EK VIVAAH... AISA BHI has not really worked. But then overseas was not a territory where EVAB was expected to achieve too much in the first place! The other release EMI too has not done well.

Checking out the results of the first 'Diwali' release, Rohit Shetty's GOLMAAL RETURNS, the film which had netted an astonishing 31 crores in its first five days run, crashed heavily Monday onwards. The 9–day run saw GOLMAAL RETURNS collecting 7.60 crores from Bombay, 2.60 crores from Ahmedabad, 1 crore from Surat, 13.10 lakhs from Nadiad, 22.55 lakhs from Anand, 75 lakhs from Baroda, 2.10 lakhs from Halol, 5.20 lakhs from Navsari, 3.05 lakhs from Ankleshwar, 3 lakhs from Billimora, 19 lakhs from Bharuch, 4.45 lakhs from Bardoli, 12.85 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 4 lakhs from Visnagar, 9.85 lakhs from Mehsana, 8.35 lakhs from Vapi, 12.10 lakhs from Valsad, 40.35 lakhs from Rajkot, 11.65 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.35 lakhs from Dwarka, 3.55 lakhs from Morbi, 2.35 lakhs from Veraval, 7.85 lakhs from Junagrah, 13.35 lakhs from Bhavngar, 5.75 lakhs from Bhuj, 8.50 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.80 crores from Pune, 18.50 lakhs from Kohlapur, 9 lakhs from Solapur, 10.70 lakhs from Sangli, 41.15 lakhs from Nasik, 27.30 lakhs from Goa, 3.10 crores from Delhi, 37.50 lakhs from Noida, 77.50 lakhs from Ghazibad, 27.60 lakhs from Kanpur, 50.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 27.60 lakhs from Agra, 21 lakhs from Varnasi, 7 lakhs from Dehradun, 23 lakhs from Meerut, 9.75 lakhs from Moradbad, 6.45 lakhs from Aligarh, 11.30 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 1.85 lakhs from Mathura, 4.50 lakhs from Jhansi, 41.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 15.80 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.10 crores from Calcutta, 45 lakhs from Nagpur, 9.10 lakhs from Amravati, 7.75 lakhs from Raipur, 2.75 lakhs from Wardha, 36.85 lakhs from Indore, 2.50 lakhs from Ujjain, 1.05 crores from Jaipur, 11 lakhs from Jodhpur, 12.65 lakhs from Ajmer, 70 lakhs from Hyderabad, 11 lakhs from Aurangabad and 7.75 lakhs from Mangalore. During its initial 9–day run, GOLMAAL RETURNS has netted a cool 41 crores from India. However, given the heavy procurement price, the battle is far from over for its distributors, Indian Films. In the Overseas, GOLMAAL RETURNS has grossed decently in the UK with $480,660, but is very ordinary in the US.

Moving on to the second 'Diwali' release, Madhur Bhandarkar's FASHION, this one too crashed after netting a good 15.90 crores during the extended holiday weekend. The actual collections during the initial run are 2.75 crores from Bombay, 70 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.10 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 4.85 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.70 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 2.75 lakhs from Gandhidham, 20 lakhs from Pune, 2.10 lakhs from Solapur, 1.35 lakhs from Sangli, 8.50 lakhs from Nasik, 1.75 crores from Delhi city, 27.50 lakhs from Noida, 11 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 7 lakhs from Kanpur, 24.35 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.60 lakhs from Agra, 3 lakhs from Allahabad, 2.25 lakhs from Meerut, 2.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 36.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 8.40 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.10 lakhs from Panipat, 95.70 lakhs from Calcutta, 18.35 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.85 lakhs from Amravati, 2.85 lakhs from Raipur, 1.10 lakhs from Wardha, 2.85 lakhs from Raipur, 1.50 lakhs from Durg, 8.85 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.65 lakhs from Ajmer, 56.50 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.05 lakhs from Warangal, 1.65 lakhs from Nanded, 1.10 lakhs from Parbhani and 5.65 lakhs from Mangalore. During its first run of 9–days, FASHION has netted around 19.50 crores from India. Given the rather high budget (for a Bhandarkar film) the producers and also the worldwide distributors UTV Motion Pictures have to rely on non–theatrical rights for even an average status. FASHION is a debacle in the Overseas, grossing a poor $61,237 from UK and a very ordinary $173,551 from the US.

Samir Karnik's mutistarrer HEROES could not overcome the pre–'Diwali' release setback and the collections hit rock–bottom. Checking out the numbers, HEROES collected 27 lakhs from Bombay, 15.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.10 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.35 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.35 lakhs from Bahvnagar and Jamnagar, 1 lakh each from Gandhidham and Solapur, 18 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.50 lakhs from Noida, 2.15 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.75 lakhs from Kanpur, 5 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.10 lakhs from Agra, 1.10 lakhs from Aligarh, 4 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.15 lakhs from Raipur, 1.20 lakhs from Indore, 4.25 lakhs from Jaipur, 1 lakh from Jodhpur and 3.75 lakhs from Hyderabad. During its second outing, HEROES added another 2.25 crores and has netted a below par 14.25 crores in two weeks from India. Thankfully, the much appreciated film has managed to get to an average to below average rating. HEROES has also fared quite well in the Overseas, grossing a fair $341,973 from UK and a creditable $655,538 from the US.

Our last entry for this week is Yash Raj Films' expensive animation setback, ROADSIDE ROMEO. The film had poor collections to show during its second week, obtaining 35 lakhs from Bombay, 5.30 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.40 lakhs from Pune, 10 lakhs from Delhi City, 1.80 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.55 lakhs from Nagpur, and 4 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding just a crore, ROADSIDE ROMEO has netted a poor 5 crores in two weeks from India and is an unmitigated disaster. The film is also one of Yash Raj's lowest grossers in the Overseas, with an embarrassing $109,895 from UK and a shockingly poor $55,202 from US.
