Bollywood box-office report of the week

Next Friday will see the release of Samir Karnik's multistarrer, HEROES and Yash Raj's ROADSIDE ROMEO. Featuring some of the bigger names of the industry from the senior and junior brigade – Sunny Deol, Salman Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol, Sohail Khan, Amrita Arora, Vatsal Seth and Riya Sen– HEROES is expected to embark on a good start. The opening is likely to be best in the Hindi belt. The other release of the week, Yash Raj Films' animated ROADSIDE ROMEO may not start with a bang, but due to the fact that it is a quality product, carrying good reports, ROADSIDE ROMEO is likely to pick up, based on good word of mouth.
However here is a dampener. As we file this report, there is news that some multiplex chains and the distributors of both HEROES as well as ROADSIDE ROMEO have disagreements on the number of shows. The people connected with both the movies are also objecting to moves by the multiplexes to reduce the shows, mid–week, to accommodate GOLMAAL RETURNS that releases on Wednesday, the 29th October. Hopefully things will work out!
Moving on to last Friday, the dull opening of Himesh Reshammiya's second film as an actor, Satish Kaushik's KARZZZZ, has shocked the trade, considering that it was extremely well promoted. Released at around 95 cinemas of Bombay city and suburbs thru Big Pictures, the opening was below the mark. Outside of Bombay, KARZZZZ saw a good opening at mass–oriented cinemas but was dull in many multiplexes. Trade feels that KARZZZZ is for the single–screens and the masses, but business from them is not enough to justify the heavy prices at which the Himesh–Urmila starrer has been sold. The film has also been rejected in the UK, collecting a dismal £4,400 on the opening day on 33 prints. Big Pictures, the worldwide distributors of KARZZZZ, will stand to lose heavily. The other release of the week, Arun Govil's SHOOT ON SIGHT had a pathetic start and has already failed miserably.
After a good to fair opening, Percept Picture Company and Funky Buddha Media's HELLO, based on Chetan Bhagat's best seller, One Night @The Call Center, dropped badly. And that was expected. The film collected 1.60 crores from Bombay, 45 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2 lakhs from Bharuch, 1.30 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 7.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.45 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.25 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.75 lakhs from Gandhidham, 54 lakhs from Pune, 1.10 lakhs from Kohlapur, 1.35 lakhs from Sangli, 7.05 lakhs from Goa, 1.25 lakhs from Hubli, 1 crore from Delhi City, 15.30 lakhs from Noida, 9.75 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.40 lakhs from Kanpur, 15.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.35 lakhs from Agra, 2 lakhs from Meerut, 3.10 lakhs from Aligarh, 2.75 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 20.15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 8 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.35 lakhs from Panipat, 33.25 lakhs from Calcutta, 2 lakhs from Guwahati, 14.05 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.35 lakhs from Amravati, 1.65 lakhs from Raipur, 1.45 lakhs from Durg, 1.35 lakhs from Wardha, 12.15 lakhs from Indore, 2.65 lakhs from Bhopal, 2.85 lakhs from Jodhpur, 1.25 lakhs from Bikaner, 2.45 lakhs from Ajmer, 31.05 lakhs from Hyderabad and 4 lakhs from Mangalore. Netting nearly 10 crores in its opening week from India, the Atul Agnihotri directed HELLO will not be a losing preposition for its worldwide distributors, due to its reasonable selling price. HELLO has however been totally rebuffed by the Overseas audience. Just for records, HELLO has so far grossed a pathetic £43,617 in the UK.
All hopes of Sanjay Gadhvi's Dutt, Imran and Minissha starrrer KIDNAP, getting to at least a recovery level vanished as the collection plummeted badly. Checking out the numbers, the film collected 50 lakhs from Bombay, 13 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.35 lakhs from Baroda, 4.85 lakhs from Surat, 4.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.25 lakhs from Jamnagar, 7.60 lakhs from Pune, 1.15 lakhs from Kohlapur, 1.10 lakhs from Solapur, 1.75 lakhs from Nasik, 3.55 lakhs from Goa, 1.10 lakhs from Hubli, 26.55 lakhs from Delhi City, 4 lakhs from Noida, 6.30 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.25 lakhs from Kanpur, 5.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.60 lakhs from Agra, 2.30 lakhs from Varanasi, 1.05 lakhs from Allhabad, 2.25 lakhs from Meerut, 1.65 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 6 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.55 lakhs from Faridabad, 15 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.75 lakhs from Nagpur, 13.55 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.05 lakhs from Mangalore. With barely 3.50 crores in its second week, KIDNAP has so far netted a poor 22.50 crores from India. KIDNAP has flopped at the ticket window, both in India and Overseas.
The sad fate of Goldie Behl's Jaya, Abhishek, Priyanka and Kay Kay starrer DRONA was obvious. The only question was how much the loss could be reduced. Unfortunately, the film saw one of the biggest crash of the year. During the week DRONA collected 11 lakhs from Bombay, 2.65 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.10 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.75 lakhs from Delhi City, 1 lakh each from Ghaziabad and Allahbad, 2.15 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Gurgaon and 1.25 lakhs from Hyderbad. With around 85 lakhs, DRONA has netted a poor 11.85 crores in two weeks from India. DRONA is a trade disaster. The film has also been rejected in the Overseas.
Coming to Neeraj Pandey's Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher starrer, A WEDNESDAY, the film continues on its rock steady run. The week saw A WEDNESDAY collecting 17.45 lakhs from Bombay, 2.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5 lakhs from Delhi City, 1.45 lakhs from Noida, 2.15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.25 lakhs from Nagpur and 2.05 lakhs from Hyderbad. During its latest outing, A WEDNESDAY added 70 lakhs, thereby netting 11.40 crores in six weeks from India. The film is now a hit plus from India.
Our last entry of this week, Abhishek Kapoor's ROCK ON! manages some more decent collections. The film collected 3.15 lakhs from Bombay, 5.45 lakhs from Delhi City and 1.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding a further 25 lakhs, the Arjun, Farhan and Prachi starrer , the super–hit ROCK ON!! has so far an impressive 27.35 crores to show in seven weeks from India.
