In the times when rip roaring comedies and light hearted comedies are ruling the roost, a movie like DRONA comes as a welcome surprise. Reason being that a hardcore masala entertainer with the battle of good v/s evil hasn't been seen on celluloid for quite some time now. Add to that the superhero look and feel (though the makers insist that DRONA should not be classified as a superhero film) and it does turn DRONA into a much anticipated watch.
However, beyond Abhishek Bachchan getting into the garb of a 'superhero', what further adds on to the film's grandeur appeal is the entire 'super villain' angle that DRONA comes with. Juda (Prem Nath) in KARZ, Mogambo (Amrish Puri) in MR. INDIA, Dr. Dang (Anupam Kher) in KARMA, Bad Man (Gulshan Grover) in RAM LAKHAN it has been quite short list when one lists down hardcore Bollywood villains who went on to become iconic in last couple of decades or so. Now Riz Raizada seems like a name which would join the list, courtesy Kay Kay Menon who turns super villain for DRONA.
Apparently crores have been spent on getting the look and ambience right for the character of Riz Raizada and the team of DRONA has ensured that Abhishek Bachchan finds his match in the battle of mind as well as body power. Incidentally Shiney Ahuja was earlier approached for this role but he dropped out pronto since he wasn't keen on doing a fullon negative role opposite Abhishek Bachchan in a hardcore commercial setup.
In any case Shiney's loss has been Kay Kay's gain since going by the look of things; he has pretty much justified his presence in the film and come up with yet another bravura performance.
We are waiting for the curtains to be off once the magic of DRONA begins from 2nd October onwards!
