KIRKIT releases this cricket season when IPL is picking up steam and though in the past there have been quite a few films made on the theme of cricket, most recently being Hurman S Baweja starrer VICTORY, this is for the first time ever that a parody has been made on this subject.

''Cricket based movies are mostly about the win of the underdog. Pick up any movie, whether LAGAAN, SAY SALAAM INDIA or Aamir Khan's old film AWWAL NUMBER - each of the films has culminated in a predictable way'', says an industry follower.

The horrific box office performance of VICTORY has only made both film makers as well as the audiences more wary about films based on the theme of cricket. Won't it be a deterrent on the prospects of KIRKIT?

CHECK OUT: KIRKIT, a parody on IPL & ICL, coming soon

''No'', promptly says Sanjay Kapoor who plays a crucial role in KIRKIT, ''A good film is a good film that will always work. Moreover, the subject and timing of KIRKIT couldn't have been better. It should release during the peak of the IPL season which will only add on its visibility.''

There have been small time films like Raveena Tandon's STUMPED or Mandira Bedi's MEERABAI NOT OUT that had cricket as a backdrop but weren't exactly about the underdogs. However, both the films were such huge trade disasters that no one remembers anything about them today.

However, a point which is worth acknowledging is that Emraan Hashmi starrer JANNAT is India's only cricket based film other than LAGAAN that has succeeded at the box office. Moreover, it too was released in May last year when IPL fever had gripped the entire nation. This Vishesh Films product explored the world of betting and match fixing in cricket.

KIRKIT, which features quite a few debutant boys playing wannabe cricketers, is produced and directed by Hyderabad based Shashi Pritam. The film also stars Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover and Sayali Bhagat in principal roles along with a bunch of youngsters.
