Piyush Jha: SIKANDAR is an anti-war film

Even though SIKANDAR deals with violence, writer-director Piyush Jha insists that the central theme of the film is that of peace. He claims that the film does not have a jingoistic or partisan point of view, and does not take sides, except the side of humanity.

''Though this is an ''anti-war'' film, I am conscious never to become moralistic or forsake story for politics. What is always most important to me is the idea that the narrative of a film has to be solid in its film craft. Hence, I have strived for an artistic aesthetic balanced with the 'suspense thriller' genre'', details Piyush Jha.

Whom does he eventually intend to impact and what is his intention behind making this film?

''My intention was to reach out to the youth especially the ones who are of the adolescent age'', reflects Piyush, ''This age is very tender and their concepts of right and wrong are very raw. So I wanted to impact them and parents especially to make them understand where their children are going. Even though this film is based in Kashmir it can easily be adapted to some other place.''

With Kashmir as the background, there is also some liberal use of pure Urdu and Hindi. How difficult is it to tell a story with such an authentic language?

Says Piyush, ''The language is Hindustani which has few Hindi words and few Urdu words. It's the kind of language that is used in Hindi songs which is easy to understand but these words are not widely used.''

Any famous last words? ''Well, I see this film not only as an expression on celluloid, but also as a vehicle for disseminating information about the region to a world audience; information that is sorely missing at this point of time'', concludes Piyush who has earlier made 'Chalo America' and 'King of Bollywood'.
