Kunal Khemu: Cricket, betting and match fixing are major elements of 99

99 is finally confirmed for 15th May release and Kunal Khemu is mighty excited about it. For the actor, this is also a litmus test of kind because though he has received critical acclaim for both DHOONDTE REH JAAOGE and JAI VEERU, a bona fide box office success is still evading him. However, if the promos are any indication, '99' seems all set to be that one film which would turn the fortunes for Kunal.
So first things first, why a title like '99'?
'Other than the metaphoric reference of 99 that you would find throughout the film, what also makes the title special is the time period in which the film is set. It is year 1999 when there was a major event that made major headlines. If you remember there was this entire talk about cricket, betting, match fixing, etc. There were some tapes that had come out around match fixing. So you see, these three are major elements of the story', says Kunal who is only willing to divulge these details about the scandal.

'Other than these fact elements there also some fictional elements incorporated in the film; like these characters who get involved in betting', says Kunal, 'This is why the film comes with a punch line of PART FACT, PART FICTION. PURE FUN.'
Mobile phones too play an important role in '99'. Late 90s was the time when cell phone culture was just heating up and creation of duplicate SIM cards was in vogue.
'Cyrus and I play two such characters who specialize in making duplicate SIM cards. It's all done in good humour though', he smiles, 'The phones that we use have to be seen to be believed though. They are those big ones; the kind that would probably be seen in museums today'.
