Akshay Kumar has all the right reasons to smile. His TEES MAAR KHAN has now taken the biggest ever opening of his career with the first day netting over 14 crores (as confirmed by the makers UTV Motion Pictures). Before TEES MAAR KHAN, Akshay's biggest opener was HOUSEFULL with the first day collections boasting of collections over 10 crores. However TMK with 14 crores has surpassed that mark by a huge margin, hence promising an enormous number once the first week comes to a close.
"This is indeed a huge achievement for Akshay Kumar," comments a trade observer, "2010 had started off well for him with HOUSEFULL being a hit. Even his KHATTA MEETHA has turned out to be a coverage affair and for the budget at which it was made, a 40 crores final run was decent enough."
"However, he was in need of a big hit and though one expected ACTION REPLAYY to be that one film which would bring in the moolah, it's failure (and also a lack of good opening) was quite disheartening," he continues, "TEES MAAR KHAN was the film which had to open well for his reputation and a phenomenal box office response like this is a shot in the arm for him."
CHECK OUT: Unprecedented advance for TEES MAAR KHAN!
The critical response to TEES MAAR KHAN hasn't been as phenomenal but with audience stepping in nonetheless, it is clear that it would be their word of mouth which will do all the talking from here on.
As for Farah Khan, she had a point top prove to all the detractors who were keeping their eyes set on whether she would be able to emulate the success of her own OM SHANTI OM and MAIN HOON NAA. As things stand today, TEES MAAR KHAN is her biggest opener as well and for the kind of budget that it has been made, there is a clear HIT in the anvil.
The eventual life time numbers which TEES MAAR KHAN would now be chasing are 93 crores [RAAJNEETI], 115 crores [GHAJINI] and 108 crores [GOLMAAL RETURNS] though 144 crores [DABANGG] is quite some distance away. And in the process of doing so, one looks forward to whether Farah's own OM SHANTI OM [80 crores] and Shah Rukh Khan's RAB NE BANA DI JODI [87 crores] would be left behind as well.
If that happens (something which looks quite possible as of now), the association would only be sweeter for Farah and Akshay.
