KHJJS: Deepika's deglam 'avatar' a bold step!

With the advent of the new breed in Bollywood, much has changed in the way films are being made and all credit to the next gen which has dared to take risks and do experimental films. And as a result we have cinema which is fast evolving and catching up with international standards. Amongst the actresses who have dared to do experimental films and not stuck to their glamorous image is Deepika Padukone.

With superhits like OM SHANTI OM, LOVE AAJ KAL and HOUSEFULL to her credit, Deepika has dared to do experimental films very early on in her career, something which not many actresses would have had the courage to do earlier. It took even a great actress like Madhri Dixit years before she finally said yes to Nana Patekar's PRAHAR, where she appeared in a totally non-glamorous, no make-up look. In case of Deepika, director Pardeep Sarkar can take credit for making her appear in a deglam role (but in parts only) in LAFANGEY PARINDEY. Her role of a determined, confident blind girl living in a 'chawl' was appreciated by all, but apart from Bombay and a few adjoining circuits LAFANGEY PARINDEY did not do as well as expected.

However in her very next, Ashutosh Gowariker's period film, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, Deepika once again appears in a totally non-glamorous 'avatar'. She plays a Bengali character Kalpana who is a revolutionary and so wears Bengali sarees (mostly with dull shades like grey, off white etc) and keeps her hair well oiled with two long braids to suit the character. In fact, during the music launch of the film, Deepika (like the rest of the cast) came in her KHJJS look and must say she looked a part of the proceedings, very composed and dignified in her simple, period look.

Well, we are sure that with a director of the caliber of Ashutosh Gowariker and co-star like Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika is indeed set for another super success in the form of KHELIEN HUM JEE JAAN SEY.
