Not even Aamir was allowed to change DELHI BELLY

DELHI BELLY has released to a riotous response with the target audience, youth, walking into multiplexes in hordes and loving the film. What has stood out in this whacky comic thriller is the one liners that brought the house down in this Aamir Khan production. This has brought to fore the writer and associate director of the film, Akshat Verma, who was so particular about the spoken word that not even Aamir Khan was allowed to make any changes to the dialogues unless Akshat approved of them.

"Akshat Verma, who has written the film, is a stickler for lines. If at all there are any changes that anyone thought, whether it was the film's director Abhinay (Deo) or any of us three actors, they had to go through Akshat. There was not even a single piece of dialogue that had made to the final cut without his approval," informs Vir Das who plays Arup in the film.

Vir goes on to add that this rule applied to Aamir Khan as well and even as the perfectionist actor suggested any change, Akshat had to be brought on board first. This is the reason why everyone was at their wits end when rumors started floating around DELHI BELLY taking off from AMERICAN PIE series.

"It was a bound script that we were working on from the very first day of the film when we landed on the workshop. It was never an AMERICAN PIE then and it never became one even as the film progressed further. I don't have any clues who started the rumors," he says in a surprised tone, "The film was more of a caper in the LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS or a SNATCH mode where three boys are taken for a ride and horrible things started happening to them. Now that the film has released, we can see the truth for ourselves."

Well Vir, the film may not be inspired by AMERICAN PIE but the kind of humour is certainly way beyond what Indian audience may have fathomed even if that indeed was the case.
