Vir Das: DELHI BELLY is whacky

Though he is an established stand-up comedian and is one of the more popular Indian faces even abroad when it comes to this piece of art, Vir states that becoming Arup (the character that he plays in DELHI BELLY) required fair bit of preparation. This means that in order to bring out the element of being seriously funny, he had to actually ignore presence of everyone around, something that was new for him as he is used to being surrounded by crowds in his stand-up comedy acts.

"It was like getting back to the basics of acting," says Vir who has a degree in acting, "Even though both stand-up comedy shows and films require me to create funny moments for the audience, it is a different setting for both."

Detailing the difference, Vir continues, "During stand-up comedy, I have to pre-empt you into creating laughter. I have to write a joke based on audience energy. Working in films is a luxury though as I don't have to engineer laughter. I take that responsibility off me as the written material is ready and all I have to do is go and execute it right. I don't have to think much about someone scrutinizing me, as it happens in stand-up shows, and all I have to do is have trust and faith that a few months down the line, your jokes would still work on screen."

In case of DELHI BELLY, these months changed to years as the film, the shooting of which was complete in 2008, is releasing now. Is Vir positive that the jokes which he mouthed then would still work on screen?

"Totally," says Vir with a wide grin, "When you would come out of the theatre, you would remember Tashi, Arup and Nitin, the three boys played by Imran, me and Kunal. And then of course you would remember the whacky humor that DELHI BELLY brings with it."

Also starring Shenaz Treasurywala, Poorna Jagannathan and Vijay Raaz, DELHI BELLY releases all over this Friday.
