Karan Johar: I was a Yash Chopra wannabe

It's a far cry from his earlier stand. Karan Johar, whose cinema was synonymous with foreign locales, gloss, loud music and over the top cinematic effect has finally mellowed down.

In the aftermath of films like UDAAN, DABANGG, 3 IDIOTS, BAND BAAJA BAARAT, the Hindi Film Industry is witnessing a great shift. And keeping pace with this changing movie making dynamics is producer Karan Johar.

One of the biggest changes that Karan has self admittedly undergone is the fact that he is no longer smitten by the crossover cinema. Karan feels that movies like UDAAN, BAAND BAJA BAARAT, 3 IDIOTS and DABANGG have proven that films which are relatable to audiences ultimately win their attention.

In his own words, Karan explains this shift in his filmmaking preference. Says he, "Earlier in my career I was a Yash Chopra wannabe. I was so influenced by his kind of cinema that you could see the influence clearly in my films in terms of foreign locales and music. Though the audiences related to that kind of cinema earlier but now times have changed. Now, the time to make cinema more relatable and closer to home is what the audiences want. Look at UDAAN and BAAND BAAJA BAARAT. Both the films have changed the way we used to look at films earlier."

And for a change, Karan Johar has decided not to shoot his upcoming film AGNEEPATH overseas. Now, this is very different from his earlier style of filmmaking in which foreign locales used to be an integral part of the narrative. Well, seems like Karan Johar believes in blending with the current style.
