Tigmanshu Dhulia: Nana Patekar is short-tempered

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia is a relived man as his film SHAGIRD is finally releasing. His last film, CHARAS released way back in 2004.

Ask him about his long break and he says, "The day CHARAS released, I began filming for KILLING OF A PORN FILMMAKER. We shot the film for merely 7 days and the producer started making another film with the same money. Then I started a period film called GHULAMI with Sunny Deol. The producer of that film fell off a building and was out of action for a year. That film got shelved. So a lot of time was wasted with no fault of mine."

Speaking about his latest film SHAGIRD, the filmmaker says, "SHAGIRD is a cop thriller set in Delhi. It's about an encounter specialist played by Nana Patekar, who wants it all. You can say that he's greedy, but he's doing it for his family. So it doesn't make him that bad. He's very endearing also. It's an intense drama about greed and desire, with lots of twists and turns."

When asked about what made him choose Nana Patekar, Tigmanshu says, "The age of the character was such that there weren't many options. Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar were the only two options."

The director reveals that he was scared to approach Nana for the role. "I was scared to approach Nana Patekar. I took one of my friends when I first went to meet him. I asked him to press the door bell if I didn't return within an hour. Unfortunately nothing of that sort happened. Nana was very sweet and cordial. We clicked instantly."

Tigmanshu also admits that shooting with Nana wasn't a piece of cake. "I will not say that we had a sort of a picnic. The atmosphere was always tensed. Nana Patekar is short tempered. He is a perfectionist. All the unit members had to be on their toes. You cannot make a mistake as he'll catch you. It was like giving your 10th class board exam. He even scolded me a couple of times on the sets. But I didn't feel bad as his intentions are not wrong," said the director before signing off.
