Pooja Bhatt stands for the LGBT community

Pooja Bhatt lended her support to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community by gracing her presence at the second Mumbai International Queer Film Festival - Kashish.

Said the director, "Kashish is India's largest queer Film Festival. Their attempt is to go mainstream and get people interested about what goes on here. If you are gay or lesbian, the most revolutionary thing is to step out of the closet. People only fear what they don't know. Festivals like these will in fact eliminate that fear. It will make people realise that you and me are the same."

When you talk about equal rights (for LGBT community), they are not special rights. Let's not beg or plead. We must demand," she added.

Ask her if the Indian audience is ready for such film and she says, "Audiences are far wiser, more accepting and giving than the filmmakers, and I include myself in that. Many a time you underestimate the audience. Though I must say, I began my career at the age of 24 when I produced a film called Tamanna. It happened to me to a time when I was doing exceedingly well as a commercial actress. But I somehow felt empty. I found this story about eunuch who picked up a girl child on the streets of Mumbai and gave her a life of dignity, much more than rich people who want to kill their fetuses. The film didn't do very well at that time as perhaps weren't multiplexes."

Speaking about the homosexual films made in Bolyywood, the filmmaker says, "Well, there have been some very relevant films made, and there have been some frivolous films made. In some of the films, gay or lesbian characters are only used to evoke laughter. They make people feel that they are caricatures. I have a problem with that."

The film festival kick-started yesterday and will go on till the 29th of May.
