Amrita Prakash: My director had tears in her eyes

The course to stardom has never run smooth for a newcomer. Even more so in the film industry where egos often rule the roost. We have heard of stories where a debutant had a tough time while shooting for the film. We have seen many work relationships crumbling due to this reason and the newcomer maintaining a zipped lip. Somehow this story takes a different turn. Grapevine has it that at an outdoor shoot in the interiors of Ladakh, Pammi Somal (writer, producer, director of the film NA JAANE KABSE) was literally in tears. And the reason for this was her heroine Amrita Prakash.

Amrita, who has earlier worked as Choti - Amrita Rao's little sis in Rajshri Films VIVAH, has always come across as an innocent, sweet and bubbly girl. Somehow the stories making the rounds that she gave a tough time to her director were hard to digest. When probed, Amrita was amused at the allegation and laughed it off. "Do you really think I could ever be so rude to someone that they would be in tears? Yes, my director did have tears in her eyes but the entire story context is being concocted".

Obviously disturbed with such maligning rumours, Amrita narrated the entire episode to come clean. "We were shooting in Ladakh for the romantic songs of the film. On reaching the hill-top location, I discovered that I was to be dressed in lace sarees and little chiffon dresses and roll around in the snow. Imagine how cold n freezing it must be at a height of 26 thousand feet above sea level. Everyone was dressed in layers and layers of warm clothes, and making restricted movements due to the high altitude- there I was dancing to the beats in a flimsy lacy saree".

Being the ultimate professional that she is, Amrita did not utter a word. For her it was a dream to be serenading in the snow a la Kajol or Sridevi in a Yash Raj Film. Yes, she did insist that some full-length long jackets and blankets wrapped around her immediately after the shot was canned.

Continuing her story, Amrita narrates, "At one point after a particularly hard shot we had to take, I went up to Pammi ma'am and noticed she was sitting in front of the monitor with tears in her eyes. I panicked and asked her what was wrong. And she said 'I'm so sorry I'm making you do this beta!!' That's Pammi ma'am- mother and director at the same time. It was so heart-warming and touching for a director to have such a humane approach to a newcomer. But honestly even though it was extremely painstaking at the time I'd do it all over again to get the result we did. I'm in love with how that particular song- 'Pyar ke Silsile'- has eventually turned out. And please, I wouldn't even kill a fly, rest assured harassing or getting someone too tears is too farfetched."
