DHYAN CHAND: SRK joins the gang of biopic saga in Hindi film industry

It seems that the phenomenal success of PAAN SINGH TOMAR has opened up a new vertical of film making, focusing on forgotten heroes of Indian sports. The maxim is being forwarded as Shah Rukh Khan has joined the party after being selected to play the role of Dhyan Chand, the hockey wizard in the country, who single-handedly was responsible for making our country number one in hockey in the world.

Choice of Shah Rukh Khan seems to be guided by the fact that he was a hockey player in his school days and has already been associated with one of the most successful films associated with our national game, CHAK DE! INDIA. The film is going to be produced by Manmohan Shetty as per the industry sources.

Farhan Akhtar has already slipped into the role of Milkha Singh which he is enacting in BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG being produced and directed by Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. Besides, Satyajeet Puri a small time actor of eighties and nineties who acted in films like KHOON BHARI MAANG, ARJUN and SHOLA AUR SHABNAM is also planning another biopic on the life of Dhyan Chand.

Consciously or unconsciously by focusing on games other than cricket to make biopics the new breed of filmmakers in Hindi cinema would be doing a yeoman service to the cause of sports in the country. The success of PAAN SINGH TOMAR has underlined the fact that sports persons associated with sports other than cricket and have brought glory to the nation need to be brought to the limelight as their success stories are a saga of grit, determination, struggle, survival, and slipping back into infamy on account of lack of glamour associated with their profession.

One may not have heard about an offspring of a cricketer being given shabby treatment but Dhyan Chand's granddaughter is being harassed for dowry and there is no sense of consternation as a generation of our country would not be aware about the entity called Major Dhyan Chand.

The romance associated with these sports stars of the likes of PAAN SINGH TOMAR, BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG and DHYAN CHAND also lies in the fact that they all were associated with the uniformed services in one form or the other, and this brings an element of romance into their struggle and survival. PAAN SINGH TOMAR has brought this aspect in succinct detail and there should not be a doubt that the same would be the case for DHYAN CHAND and BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG as well.

As the era of biopics associated with sports has started gaining ground one only hopes that the focus would also shift to women sports stars as well of the likes of Bachendri Pal, Ashwini Nachchapa etc., whose story of success is in no way less eventful as those of their male brethren.

With initiatives of these kinds a day is not far off when we could also have a compilation of 100 best sports films from India as well.
