ISHAQZAADE: Romeo Juliet's nth version

William Shakespeare must be quite happy that even though it has been more than five centuries since he wrote his epoch drama ROMEO JULIET, but such is its fan following that it continues to be interpreted through different cultural nuances down the ages. Indeed, the theme becomes topical when the basic idea of the spirit of the play is juxtaposed against the social milieu of the present times, and the new breed of film directors are quite adept at adapting Shakespeare's work in a rather erudite manner.

So the latest adaptation of ROMEO JULIET is in the form of ISHAQZAADE, which has been set up against the cultural backdrop of Hindi hinterland where the guns still rule the roost and it is the ability to take it out and shoot it that determines the social standing of a person in the society. With Habib Faisal holding the baton to direct ISHAQZAADE, one need not worry about the element of drama that the film would provide, as Habib Faisal is one of the most accomplished writers and theatre professional.

The comparative contrast of injecting the element of rustiness in the modern interpretation as it has been done in ISHAQZAADE as against the sophistication of Victorian background addressing which ROMEO JULIET was written, emerges as the catalyst to establish a direct link with the film viewing public of the Hindi heartland. It is this public that determines the fate of a movie, and therefore pandering to the tell tale signs of the social nuances of the present times is what is turning out to be a USP for ISHAQZAADE.

After all, still majority of India traces its roots to its rural settings, and when such an element of the connect is provided through the cinematic oeuvre it indeed is a visual delight. Added icing on the cake for ISHAQZAADE is that it has two new faces Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra, who do not have a baggage from the past so they would facilitate in letting the characters they portray on the screen become their talking point. For Yash Raj Films it is after a really long time that the banner is returning to the era of action in a big way, but they have not done away with their core USP, Romance, as it is a romance that is the underlining motif of the film having seasoning in the form of hardcore violence as it is a wont in the hinterlands of UP.

For an industry that has been looking for new faces, maybe Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra could be the face that could take the mantle of the industry forward through ISHAQZAADE.
