JISM 2: Coming-of-age skin show in Indian cinema

Apart from the fact that JISM 2 is the first Indian film where Sunny Leone from being a pornography star has moved on to mainstream acting, has it also paved the way for other stars who act in pornography films to aspire to be drafted into the mainstream cinema one day, in particular those who are acting in the Indian pornography industry?

Hollywood does not have an issue about a star who has acted in a pornographic film to try luck in the mainstream cinema, Sylvester Stallone is a prime example, but Hindi cinema has not been that benevolent enough. For the Bhatts especially Pooja Bhatt to take this bold step forward to cast a pornography star as the lead in her film, JISM 2 is a monumental step forward. One is reminded of a quote that Pooja Bhatt had given more than a decade ago when she was among the top stars and had posed in a body paint suit of a popular magazine.

At that time when critics and cynics had cared about her supposedly audacious act, Pooja Bhatt had told that Indians had sex in their mind, and a decade later may be the scenario has not changed. For most of the Indians sex exists in the mental faculty and probably by using a porn star in JISM 2, Pooja Bhatt in her own way has tried to change the paradigm associated with the porn industry.

But is it an Outlier moment in Hindi cinema, or is it that the fetish for white skin which has become a predominant motif these days is the overriding factor as also the expectation in the minds of the public to see some kind of skin show on the screen? Well, for one Sunny Leone, in JISM 2 had enacted the role of a porn star, so for her it was an extension of the role that had made her famous around the world.

Besides, as a fall out of the euphoria associated with JISM 2 she has been signed for a condom campaign which is going to be released shortly. If there is a redeeming feature for Sunny Leone, it is that she has been signed for a role in the remake of ZANJEER, and in all probability she would be enacting the role that Bindu had enacted in the original version of ZANJEER.

Whatever be the case, one thing is for sure that JISM 2 is a manifestation of the latent sexual urges of the Indian male finding an expression on a really large canvas. Has it exorcised the sort of stigma associated with a projection of sexual scenes on the screen in Hindi cinema would be a matter to watch out as it pans out on the canvas of time.
