Salman, Aamir, Akshay's 'name game' in Bollywood!

While the DABANGG series gave Salman Khan a new image, an image of an affable cop, who is not honest and upright, but uses the deficiencies of the system for his own and the benefit of those who live at the fringe of the society, it seems Salman Khan consciously used a name- Chulbul Pandey to bring about a sense of instant connect with the audience in the eastern and northern part of the country.

For Salman Khan it was a major leap forward from being 'Prem' in most of his movies, to suddenly choosing a name - Chulbul Pandey, which may be sneered at by those who belong to the elite crust of the society, but for the proletariat choosing a name of the like of CHULBUL PANDEY developed instant chemistry with the character that Salman Khan was playing and it was in a way also responsible for making DABANGG such a monumental hit. May be the name of villain in DABANGG as Chedi Singh was also a conscious choice to accentuate the association and deconstruct the persona by giving it a name which is in sync with the names that exist for the common man on the street.

The idea of creating a character with a name like Chulbul Pandey seems to have caught the fancy of Akshay Kumar as well, as his character in the film KHILADI 786, his latest release was BAHATTAR SINGH.

But if there is a man who should get the accolade for trying out such names with his characters in a big way, it would be Raj Kumar Hirani. He popularised a name like Circuit in his film MUNNABHAI MBBS, followed it up with Chhanchad in 3 IDIOTS and has taken it up to a new heights with his new film P.K., where the character is called PK.

One is reminded of the snigger that the upper society has for such names, when one rewinds to DIL HAI KI MANTA NAHI, where Aamir Khan had played the character called Raghu Jaitley, and when he had introduced himself to Pooja Bhatt the sense of disgust hearing the name on her face was a manifestation of how the christening of a name in itself has connotations associated with a class.

It seems that even Vishal Bhardwaj has also got enamored of this naming business as his new film starring Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma is named MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA. William Shakespeare would indeed be chuckling- After all, What's in a name? However, it would be interesting if female characters also are given such names, and may be 2013 could initiate this trend.
