EK MAIN AUR EKK TU: Man-Woman relationships in a new ligh

One of the highpoints of EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, a rare occasion in history of Hindi cinema, if one were to discount BAMBAI KA BABU (Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen do not marry as they are found to be brothers and sisters), is that the lead players in the film Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor do not marry each other and live happily thereafter, but continue to be friends as the film comes to a close ( though Imran Khan continues to have hopes in the heart that someday Kareena might relent, and would it be a case for a sequel, may be, who knows). The jury may be out whether it is one of the fine performances of Imran Khan or not but Kareena Kapoor has done a neat job in her role in EMAET.
EMAET, in sync with the spirit promoted by 3 IDIOTS harps upon the fact that the parents should not and ought not decide the destiny of their children and encourages children to question parents and suggests to them to rebel against the wishes of the parents to live their dreams through the eyes of their children. After all, children have their own destiny.

Another high point of EMAET is the manner in which the Christian family has been projected in the film. It has not fallen into the trap of a hackneyed world view of Christian family, where the father is a boisterous drunkard, while other members continue to live incoherently. Here is a family which is intelligent and knows how to enjoy life, and does not wear its religious identity on its sleeves. The father is an educated person and enlightened one at that as he has the confidence to ask the guest who has been brought by his daughter to their house whether he had a sex with her daughter.
From this perspective it is a high point for the film as rarely the issues of sex are talked about so nonchalantly in Hindi cinema, as it is done in Hollywood films. It also underlines the levels of maturity about the issue among the new generation and the parental generation striving to accept it as a part of the modern social construct as well.
As it had happened in ZNMD (ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA) with 'Senorita', the whacky song sung by Ash King in EMAET - 'Auntyji', is a peppy song harking back to the era of Elvis Presley and Bosco Caesar himself being the part of the song in the film has insured a peppy dance on the floor. Those sitting in the cinema hall belonging to the older generation were also grooving to the foot tapping of the song, and this song is surely going to be a part of dance parties post EMAET.
If one has to point out the deficiencies of EMAET, it would be the wastage of stalwart performers like Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani, and Ram Kapoor etc., who could have been used more imaginatively to bring in the humor in this rom-com.
But the underlining feature is, more than twenty years ago Mohnish Behal in MAINE PYAAR KIYA had said that a girl and a boy can never be friends, but EMAET has stuck its neck out and echoed that a boy and a girl indeed can be friends, and the emphasis has been more from the side of the girl, which is worth focusing upon.
