KAHAANI's 'Aami Shotti Bolchi' Salute to city of joy - Kolkata

Fortuitous as it may sound, the recently released song from KAHAANI focusing on the city of Kolkata, indeed is another gem that has got the punch thanks to sonorous voice of Usha Uthup, and it is an apt tribute to the city where Usha Uthup has settled down, and is scaling the musical charts all over, contributed in a way also by the award that Usha Uthup won for her singing in the latest edition of Filmfare awards.

It however is ironical that Kolkata which has given so many luminaries to the world of entertainment in Hindi cinema has got a song as a tribute to the city after such a long time. The irony is manifest if one were to view it from the perspective that Mumbai as a city or for that matter even Delhi have got songs that eulogize and underline the importance of the vibrancy of these two cities.

Kolkata is the real melting pot of all kind of cultures, and by paying a tribute to the city in the sonorous voice of Usha Uthup, the makers of KAHAANI have ensured that the footfalls would increase for the film, as it is for the first time in a Hindi film that a song has been created, paying tribute to the memory of the city of Joy aka Kolkata.

While one salutes the makers of the film KAHAANI for paying the tribute to Kolkata through 'Aami Shotti Bolchi', one also wonders why and how Mani Ratnam missed out paying tribute the city of joy though his last successful film YUVA that was based in Kolkata and underlined the mood of aspiration of the youth of the city, though he had a Rahman as his music director. May be, the fact would have been glossed over as Mani Ratnam, did not belong to the city though he had based the film in Kolkata.

The connect to a city and the effort to pay tribute to it through the cinematic oeuvre is more by those who have grown up in these cities, have migrated to different cities, but when they got the opportunity have paid the tribute to it, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra being the latest example of this kind. His DELHI 6 had a title song paying tribute to the capital of the country as it has evolved over a course of time.

It would indeed be wonderful if henceforth cities that are used as a major backdrop also get songs to eulogize their evolution, as the process of identifying a city with a song catalyzes remembrance for a city in a romantic manner, and the business of cinema after all is about creating a feeling of nostalgia and romance.
