Musician Anthony Gonsalves passes away in Goa

The legendary Goan musician Anthony Prabhu Gonsalves, credited with pioneering the orchestra and whose name was immortalized in a 1977 Manmohan Desai film song starring Amitabh Bachchan, breathed his last at Goa Medical College Wednesday evening.

The musician, who started as a violinist in a group of composer Naushad in 1943, was admitted in the hospital for medical check up on Jan 9 but succumbed to low blood pressure at 7pm Wednesday.

The 84-year-old maestro, hailing from Majorda in South Goa was awarded 'lifetime achievement' in Mumbai in Sept 2010 followed by 'Karnaveer Puraskar' in Goa in November 2010.

To commemorate his achievement, a 58-minute film on Gonsalves was screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year.

With over 1000 songs to his credit in over 250 films, the multifaceted musician had worked with renowned musicians like R D Burman and Pyarelal Sharma.

In 1977, as a tribute to the legendary, Manmohan Desai's movie AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY had Amitabh Bachchan's character replaced from Anthony Fernandes to Gonsalves.

The song 'My Name is Anthony Gonsalves' was yet another tribute to the legendary.

Gonsalves is survived by his wife Melita, son Kiran and daughter Laxmi. His final rites will be conducted after Kiran's return from UK.
