Satyamev Jayate: Aamir slams social stratification through caste

Trust Aamir Khan to keep the audience guessing about the issue that he would focus upon. The tenth episode of Satyamev Jayate brought into relief the social ostracisation associated with caste in succinct detail, and to drive home the point in a profound manner. Aamir Khan chose a Sanskrit Professor of Delhi University, who belongs to the 'so called' most down-trodden community of the society, Kaushal, who in spite of all odds and stigma associated with the caste to which she belongs, has become a scholar of Sanskrit and also teaches the subject. The brahmanical order of the society would squirm at the thought, that one who is not supposed to be associated with a language, has become a teacher in the subject.

For Kaushal it was a double whammy, as on the one hand she belonged to Dalit community and on the other hand she also was a woman but she fought against the insurmountable odds to become successful, but still the society is not agreeable to accept her achievement.

As Stalin, who was also a part of the programme, and has made a documentary on caste commented, caste still proliferates in the country in spite of all the measures that have been created in the constitution. Even the religions of the likes of Sikhism and Islam, who do not have a social structure based on caste, were shown to practice it. May be, owing to the manner in which our civilization has been constructed, where the rigidities of caste have taken deep roots since eons, it indeed has become tad difficult to break the shackles.

One is reminded of an incident that had happened in Punjab way back in 1993. A group of Sikh women belonging to a lower caste, supposedly involved in pick-pocketing were branded on their face as जेबकतरनी and though a furor was created the matter died down. Would such kind of a punishment had been handed out if those who were involved in the incident belonged to upper caste?

Prof. Anil Gupta of IIM Ahmedabad, expounding his view on the programme echoed, ''I am proud of you Stalin and Wilson and all others engaged in this struggle on behalf of the untouchables. Thanks Aamir for giving this cause the visibility it deserves, the point about why commonwealth games were not postponed despite all the corruptions and storms, but the commitment to remove manual scavenging gets deferred time and again shows the hypocrisy of our political class. Not once did parliament stop working because the India untouched takes it lying down. I salute all the fighters in this cause, long live justice Dharmadhikari and bless the team for once again focusing on the persistent inertia India has learned to live with.''
