Dara Singh: The man who reached out to help people without seeking anything in return

The goodwill of a person, as they say, is manifest in the fond memories that those who have been associated with the individual share after the individual's physical form on earth comes to an end. From that perspective the kind of tributes that Dara Singh is getting, indeed is a manifestation about the fact that here was an individual who always had a lion's heart to help out individuals whenever they needed help, and he never sought anything in return.

Yesteryear famous star, Mumtaz is one such actresses who would not have graduated to the A-star status had Dara Singh not helped her in her initial years to graduate from being an actress to act opposite her in number of films which provided her the launching pad to move to A-category films. Dara Singh in his heydays was the superstar in B-category films and by acting opposite Mumtaz in a number of films he provided her the much needed visibility to push the envelope and become a big star. The first such film where Mumtaz and Dara Singh acted together was FAULAD and they did a dozen of films together before Mumtaz moved over to acting with other big actors. The acting relationship later on evolved into family relationship as well, as Dara Singh's brother got married to Mumtaz's sister.

In the same manner Dara Singh had risen to the rescue of producer-director Raj Tilak when he was left in a sticky situation in a wrestling match at Jaipur. Raj Tilak had organized a wrestling match and the organizers ran away with the money. The wrestlers wanted their money and Raj Tilak could have been mauled but for Dara Singh who asked his fellow wrestlers not to torment Raj Tilak. Subsequently this relationship blossomed when Raj Tilak walked into the world of cinema.

Dara Singh was also one actor who continues to endear generations of children with his advocacy to eat eggs. The latest campaign where he featured showed him as a grandfather advocating virtues of eating eggs, while a decade ago he was a father extolling its qualities. Dara Singh was one of the best brand ambassadors that egg producers could ever have had, in the same category as the Amul Girl, but he did not get the same mileage.

He was a man who led his life with dignity and honesty, a fact that was underlined by tweet that Farhan Akhtar had posted as a tribute to Dara Singh. Anand Mahindra paying his obeisance had remarked that the name Dara Singh became an idiom for physical health and vigor, rather than being a name associated with an individual. One does not know whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni the Indian cricket captain ever watch Dara Singh's fights, as Dara Singh was the man who had developed the ''helicopter'' variety of style, where he used to lift the wrestler and toss him around, in the same way as Dhoni when he so wishes does the same to the humble cricket ball.

Individuals would come and individuals would go but never would the world of Hindi cinema be able to have a gentle giant like Dara Singh who was a gentleman to the core. May be Hindi cinema needed to write more roles - grand-father roles, the kind that he enacted in JAB WE MET, as he was epitome of what a grandfather was all about. For a generation which seldom gets a chance to interact with grandfathers, they could have found an instant connect through Dara Singh's characters, as he always was a simpleton at heart and this was what used to ignite the screen.
