Satyamev Jayate: Aamir Khan focuses on water crisis

More than five centuries ago Rahim, the great philosopher belonging to medieval India had written रहिमन पानी राखिए बिन पानी सब सून पानी गए न उबरे मोती मानुस चून-i.e. respect water or everything would become barren, be it the human being, pearl or lime, all of it needs water to sustain, survive and prosper. Indeed, the failure of monsoon across the country this year, and the emerging fights all over to get the elixir of life aka water was poignantly focused by Aamir Khan in the latest episode of Satyamev Jayate broadcast on 22 July 2012.
What Rahim had written with foresight is indeed haunting our citizens all across the country, but the sad part and an ironic one at that, the generation which is growing up, and would be at the helm of affairs within the next five years is totally ignorant about the manner in which water reaches their taps. Aamir Khan drove home the point among the students in succinct detail, perhaps stirring their consciousness that they indeed should also start worrying about water.
As a matter of fact Hindi cinema, and for that matter cinema in India per se has been sensitive to the issue of water and concomitant problems associated with it and THANNEER THANNEER, a film made in Tamil more than two decades ago had indicated in detailed about the catastrophe unfolding if water was not tackled in a proper manner.
Rahul Bose's film SPLIT WIDE OPEN made in 1999 by Dev Benegal had brought out in succinct detail the tanker mafia that operates in Mumbai and how it is having the debilitating effect on the city, and now the tanker associated water supply has started causing water riots in villages as well, as it was shown in the episode where few families lost their lives while trying to draw water for their family.

The timing of the piped water supply in cities and even in villages is now guiding the social commitments, and water indirectly is impacting the lives. Our rivers have become so polluted that they are unfit for any kind of usage, be it Yamuna, Ganga or any river.
What Aamir Khan has focused upon in SMJ is only the tip of the iceberg. Water crisis is looming large, and it is owing to the reckless drawl of water from underground. Water which was available at 80 feet is now not to be found at even 200 feet. As one of the experts in the programme poignantly said, fluoride etc., being found in water is a warning sign from the nature to human beings to stop its exploitation. The layering of fluoride at a certain level by nature was warming sign not to go beyond a certain level, but we are not bothered.
Indeed, one has to thank the electricity department around the country side for having contributed towards the cause of water by not providing continuous electricity or else we will pump out all water. Gurgaon has already banned use of ground water for construction. Shekhar Kapoor long time ago had planned a film on Water, may be the time has come for him to pick up the baton once again as Aamir Khan has given the clue. Shekhar Kapoor and Aamir Khan could not work together in TIME MACHINE, but they could collaborate on the film on water.
