Whistling Woods' 'Cinema 100' begins today

Though the industry has not yet come forward to celebrate the monumental milestone in the history of Indian cinema on a collective platform, there is one individual who has decided to celebrate this monumental feat on his own. The person who has taken the initiative is Subhash Ghai and he is using the platform of his film training institute Whistling Woods, to bring about a conglomerate of professionals associated with cinema in different forms to celebrate the occasion and the curtain would be raised today to mark the eponymous occasion. The film festival is titled as 'Cinema 100'.

The occasion of celebration would be marked by an eclectic mix of speeches, as also by film shows that try to encompass the journey of hundred years. Around 32 films have been slotted for the occasion and they try to encompass films from the silent era right up to DIL WAALE DULHANIA LE JAENGE. To emphasize about the role the silent films played in the evolution of cinema per se, THE ARTIST has also been included as the part of the repertoire to underline the era of transformation, of the shift from silent to dialogues and how it impacted the film industry as a whole.

To pay tribute to the manner in which Indian cinema has evolved over the past century films from different languages, i.e. Bengali and Tamil are also being showcased. While the Bengali films are being shown in the original, the Tamil films that have been chosen (of the likes of ROJA and PUSHPAK) are Hindi adaptations. In the same manner landmark Marathi films like SHWAAS and HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY has also been included as a part of the repertoire.

The choice of the films seems to be guided by the fact that each of the films selected have been watershed in the evolution of Indian cinema and what needs to be underlined is the fact that Subhash Ghai has shown the way to initiate the process of celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema and it is now for the others to take it forward.

Since it is a show that is being organized by one of the biggest showman that Hindi film industry has ever seen, the occasion would also be used to showcase what his students have achieved under his tutalege. So the Festival has a special category that would showcase documentaries prepared by students of Whistling Woods International on directors, screenwriters, actors producers etc., of yester years and contrasting them with the contemporaries of the present times.

It is going to be three days of hectic activity for the cinema buffs and one only hopes that it would be curtains raiser for the occasion and would catalyze more such celebrations around the countryside in different Meccas of cinema and would culminate in a gala closure next year, where in Subhaash Ghai should again present for the cinema buffs the achievements that have been made by holding such festivals around the countryside, and the leanings from such festivals.
