On the 1st day of June, Whistling Woods International embarked on a historical journey. A. R. Rahman kick-started the three day extravaganza celebrating the completion of a century of Indian Cinema. It was a very musical day at Whistling Woods with legends like A.R. Rahman, Gulzaar Saab, Saroj Khan and Sukhwinder Singh creating an atmosphere of nostalgia for all music and dance lovers alike.

Meghna Ghai Puri, President, Whistling Woods International, welcomed everyone with great pride, "'Cinema 100' is here to bring out the magnificence and variety of Indian Cinema. I am overwhelmed by the dedication and passion of my staff and students."

The inaugural function took off with the unveiling of a life size statue of Dadasaheb Phalke by A.R. Rahman to deafening applause. The same applause welcomed the founder of Whistling Woods International, Subhash Ghai to the podium. "God has really blessed me. Every crisis is a celebration in itself. All of you have been a shoulder to me. I am very emotional at the moment but grateful that you are here. What I have achieved over the years is love and trust of the people. Whistling Woods will never give up. We will prove to the world that we are the best," said the evergreen showman.

A short film was prepared depicting the kaleidoscopic evolution of Indian cinema right from the black and white era, through the golden years until present day. The future of cinema was highlighted as Whistling Woods International.

Everyone swayed to the songs sung by Sukhwinder Singh as he emphatically stated, "Sufism is the most romantic musical style." Subhash Ghai lovingly referred to him as 'Ramta Jogi' as he had a playful tee-a-tete with his prodigy. The inaugural ceremony came to a close with Sukhwinder Singh unraveling the mystery behind poetry in cinema. His musical analysis of the song 'Bidi Jalaile' from the movie OMKARA, gave the audience a novel perspective on the power of lyrics in music. The poetry workshop with Gulzar Saab was an instant hit with the entire hall giving him a standing ovation. "If anything happens to this institute, I will be the saddest person in the city," exclaimed the legendary lyricist.

Indian Cinema is incomplete without dance and the best person to know about its evolution had to be Saroj Khan. The choreographer, who started dancing at the age of 3 and began teaching dance at the tender age of 14, has seen the various changes that this industry has undergone over the last couple of years.

The young stars from the movie ISHAQZAADE, indulged in an informal chat with the students about their experience at Whistling Woods and their work. When asked about the student initiative 'Cinema 100', Parineeti Chopra piqued, "It is mind-blowing." They both clearly enjoyed the entire experience of being part of this beautiful celebration and left with smiling faces. Industry veterans such as Randhir Kapoor, K. Shantaram, Rakesh Mehra and Jackie Shroff were also in attendance.

The first day of this three day event ended with the most important film of our industry. 18 minutes of RAJA HARISHCHANDRA, the only part of the first ever silent Hindi feature film available was screened, followed by the Marathi film depicting its making, HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY. This enthralling experience summed up the whole spirit of Cinema 100!
