Faiza remembers MALEGAON lead actor Shafique

Shafique Shaikh, the lead actor of SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON, died a year after the film was made. He had been suffering from mouth cancer because of excessive tobacco chewing. Ironically in the film, as a Superman he takes on the Gutka King who wants to spread tobacco use in the town.

Filmmaker Faiza Ahmad Khan, whose documentary SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON is on the making of decidedly tongue-in-cheek superhero adventure, MALEGAON KA SUPERMAN, stayed in Malegaon for near about 3 months where she bonded with the lead actor Shafique. Now that her documentary on the widely raved about film is on the verge of release, Faiza remembers Shafique.

"It's really sad that Shafique's not here to see the big screen release of the film. We always and we will miss him during the premiere. It is so hard to believe that he is not between us with whom we spent maximum time. Sometimes, we never feel he's gone. Whenever we watch the film we just feel he's there along with us," says Faiza on an emotional note.

Faiza further comments on Shafique's nature and his dedication for work. She says, "He was affable, good natured with subtle sense of humor. We would often go to his house and gradually became part of his daily life."

"He was quiet, good humoured, and absolutely dedicated to his work. When the director Nasir asked him to jump off from a building to an electric poll, he sportingly did it. While for everyone it was a joke, he was damn serious about his work," she added further.

Shafique was highly excited about his film since it was his first big role. Shafique used to tell Faiza that after working on this film people will fondly remember him as Superman.

Shafique is survived by his wife and two daughters; one was just 3 months old when he died. Faiza and her team members even met his family members and are trying their best to support them.

"We did contribute to his treatment. And even went and met his family after he passed away. We are taking good care of his family whenever & wherever required. Lots of people have volunteered and lent their support to the family."

"Fans worldwide now know about the film. There are appreciation and condolence letters coming all the way from Germany, America, etc," she adds.

SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON, a documentary that captures a motley bunch of cinema fanatics in Malegaon, Maharashtra who remake Bollywood and Hollywood films on miniscule budgets, which they shoot and star in, and screen for their local audience in Malegaon. It is slated to release in India on 29th June 2012.
