The 'supermen' of Malegaon film industry!

SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON, is a documentary which tries to encapsulate a spirit of passion for cinema and movie making for a bunch of intrepid filmmakers, who love cinema to the tune of being fanatic, and are least bothered about the resources to make the movies, rather have taken the lack of resources as the challenge and devised in genuine processes and devices to mesmerize the audience with their offering. These bunch of filmmakers are least bothered to release their film on a pan India basis, and are content that the film is seen by the residents of Malegaon, a small township in Maharashtra characterized by its powerlooms and endemic power cuts.

The journey of filmmaking in Malegaon began with Naseer a videographer who decided to venture into the business of filmmaking. He had a captive audience in Malegaon which is crazy about cinema, as it is the only time pass that the residents of Malegaon have, what with 12 hour power cuts on a daily basis. Naseer ventured in the arena with MALEGAON KE SHOLAY which was a roaring hit and gave Naseer the idea to come up with more adaptations of the hit films with a tag of MALEGAON. This documentary traces the journey of this filmmaking by the committed fans of cinema in MALEGAON, and is a tribute to the spirit of ingenuity that they keep on adapting to complete the film. It is the only film industry in India which is run and controlled by Muslims and it does not allow the local women to act in MALEGAON series.

What caught the imagination of the Director Faiza Ahmed Khan to choose MALEGAON as the subject was the determination of the filmmakers to make a film on the life of SUPERMAN after having focused on hit Hindi films. The film has been aptly titled as SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON as indeed these are SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON who have redefined the contours of filmmaking and have told the world that if one has determination lack of resources is never a problem to realize the dream of seeing a story getting converted into a cinematic oeuvre on the screen. Produced by Gargey Trivedi and Siddharth Thakur, the producer director duo has won the Asian Pitch in Singapore.

The Asian Pitch is organised by Mediacorp in Singapore, NHK in Japan and KBS in South Korea. Several directors were invited to pitch their subjects, and SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON was one of the three films that won the fund.

Made over a period of seven months, SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON picked up its first award in Rome, at the Asiatica Film Mediale, where it won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary. Subsequently it has been screened at over thirty prestigious International Film Festivals including Silverdocs and Full Frame Documentary Festivals in the US, the Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic and IFFI in India, and has won 15 awards for its crew.

As director Faiza Khan has stated, wherever SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON has been screened it has engaged the audience in its own way, be it the open air screening in Narmada valley or at Vikalp screening, audience has come in droves to lap up this film. SUPERMEN OF MALEGAON is a step forward to carve a space for more such kind of films in future as audience is waiting for these kinds of film which have an element of imagination and experimentation as its hallmark.
