How Sujoy played smart with Vidya's KAHAANI

While KAHAANI has managed to earn good moolah for itself and turned out to be superhit at the box office with over 50 crores already in its kitty, not many are aware that Sujoy had to go through quite a few conversations with the investors before the budget was allotted to KAHAANI. In fact on paper the film's budget was much higher but Sujoy took a practical approach by slicing it down so that it turned out to be a win-win situation for all.

"See, you have to retain a certain amount of practicality while making a film. At the end of the day if I have borrowed money from you, I should be able to assure you that I have at the least minimized risks, if not completely eliminated them. I couldn't have gone ahead and told people that 'Hey, let's make a 30 crore budget movie with Vidya as a solo lead. And yeah, by the way she plays a pregnant woman covered from head to toe in the film'. Trust me; I would have been the first person to laugh at myself. One can't afford to go haywire in such matters," says Sujoy.

Resultantly the film was made in a record time. Though for a film of this scale normally requires 60-65 days of shoot, Sujoy wrapped it up around the 50 days mark, hence preventing additional costs. This is the reason why eventually the film was made on a much lesser budget even though 80% of the shoot was in outdoors with Kolkata where real crowd thronged the roads and narrow by-lanes.

"We had to work smart. Period. Thankfully this is where the learning came from a much expensive ALADIN. I knew now how to cut costs by incorporating certain shortcuts," says Sujoy, "Of course this also meant that there was a lot of emphasis on planning, scheduling and the actual shoot. I had an inkling that eventually I would be able to make KAHAANI in one third budget of what was written on paper."
