Dibakar on SHANGHAI: I enjoy taking risks

SHANGHAI is all set to release and appears to be one mighty film all set to be unveiled. For its director Dibakar Banerjee, the film has been yet another platform to experiment, what with an integral part of the film involving a murder being viewed from as many as 11 different perspectives. For someone who has been largely experimental in each of his outings so far, whether it is KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA and now SHANGHAI, it is obvious that Dibakar hasn't quite taken a conventional route. Isn't that risky for the director?

"Well yes, I have taken risks but then they have been well calculated," says Dibakar in a confident tone, "When I worked on KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, I had Boman Irani, a Parshi, playing a Sikh guy. Then in OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, we had cast Abhay when he wasn't so very well known. In the same film I had cast a Gujarati Paresh Rawal as a Sikh. On the other hand in LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA, each of the six lead protagonists was a newcomer with camera as a central character. Now in SHANGHAI, Abhay is playing a man who is 40 years plus in age and also carries a paunch. Moreover the narrative is quite unique as well."

"So as you can see, I enjoy taking risks with every film. If I don't get to do something new there, I don't find the process of filmmaking interesting," he adds.

We do believe that SHANGHAI has a lot of interesting things to offer as well. With Kali Koechlin as the female protagonist, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Farooq Sheikh in key roles and music by Vishal-Shekhar, the film releases all over on 8th June.
