Is era of gang films coming back?

Trailer of GANGS OF WASSEYPUR and DEPARTMENT have gone viral and there is a lot of anticipation for both the films. These two films are going to be followed in quick succession by SHOOTOUT AT WADALA, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI - 2 and ZILLA GHAZIABAD.

The new era of gangster films that are making their comeback in the world of Hindi cinema are characterized by picking up the content related to gangsters outside Mumbai. From this perspective it is a new phase, as so far whatever gang films that have been made in the world of Hindi cinema have drawn heavily from the real life gang wars in and around Mumbai.

Anurag Kashyap has taken the lead in picking up the story from the Hindi heartland through his new film GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, and for Anurag Kashyap it is a long step forward as he also made his mark in the gangster film with SATYA which was a story that drew its inspiration from Mumbai. But GANGS OF WASSEYPUR harks back to the era when mafia dons used to rule roost in the erstwhile Bihar around the coal mines of Dhanbad, and even the Prime Minister of the country Chandra Sekhar used to hobnob with them.

To create the feel of the era GANGS OF WASSEYPUR has been shot at real rustic locations in Bihar and Jharkhand and Anurag Kashyap, as he has established a style for himself of popping something new with each succeeding product that he offers, and it has two films of 40 minutes duration each, complete in themselves, spanning across three generations and six decades.

As far as DEPARTMENT is concerned, Ram Gopal Verma's latest offering starring Big B, Rana Duggabatti and Sanjay Dutt again returns to the big bad underworld of Mumbai, but now from the perspective of cops, i.e. how the cops dealt with the world of gangs. In the genre of gangster films that Ram Gopal Verma has made, he continues to experiment in his gangster films from both the perspectives, that of the gangster as also the policeman.

ZILLA GHAZIABAD would travel the path of the Mahendar Fauzi who was a terror during his times in Ghaziabad in UP and it has an ensemble cast of Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Vivek Oberoi. ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI-2 would be an oeuvre underlining the emergence of Dawood Ibrahim in the world of gangsters in Hindi cinema, the role being enacted by Akshay Kumar, while SHOOTOUT AT WADALA again is a film from the perspective of Mumbai cops.

One thing is for sure, the gangster films indeed trigger the rush of adrenaline and such is the sense of excitement associated with this genre among the fans of Hindi cinema that the investment of Rs. 170 crores that rides on these 5 films should not be a losing proposition.
