Aamir Khan's Satyamvev Jayate audacity of hope

Aamir Khan has never followed the league so when he made his debut on television it had to be different. First difference was that this programme was even telecast live on the national television channel all across, expanding the outreach of the programme. Secondly, Aamir as has been his wont, did not use the route of entertainment to make his television debut, but instead decided to use the burning social issues, which government is sanguine about to make an impact.

Indeed the impact of the inaugural show has been phenomenal as Aamir Khan chose to focus on one of the most burning issues of the times, female infanticide to stir the consciousness of the nation. The programme has been researched thoroughly manifest from the fact that the sting operation done by Sahara TV on the issue was used as the base and the journalists were invited to share their experience. The journalists did the sting operation four years ago in Rajasthan but nothing has happened so far, maybe SATYAMEV JAYATE would be able to do it.

Aamir has invited SMS based voting to support the cause he is espousing and the same would be sent as a petition for expediting the case, in the election season in Rajasthan it could be a cannon fodder. From the apparent tenor of the programme it is apparent that SATYAMEV JAYATE is an exercise through video social media which is going to go viral, as Aamir has invited even video feedback on the programme through his website.

What million of dollars pumped by the government could not do for female infanticide, Aamir's programme can do it. This could be the reason why even Reliance Foundation has decided to support the cause.

For the leaders of the present times, who feel that once they reach the parliament they are above all the laws of the land, SATYAMEV JAYATE indeed could be a reality check across political lines, and one could hear some voice of dissent against it in the times to come, especially from the leaders who belong to an era where such kind of interventions are considered anachronistic.

But if the leaders ignore the issue it will be at their peril as Aamir has set the agenda for the discourse. It was evident from the brief interaction that he had with the unmarried males in Kurukshetra in the programme. The unmarried males wanted Aamir to plead for them with Salman Khan be their leader and in his deadpan manner Aamir ridiculed their position by telling them that for Salman it was a problem of plenty but for them it was a problem of availability.

Lots of effort has gone into conceptualizing the idea and the opening shot of SATYAMEV JAYATE has gone viral manifest from the comments on twitter from all and sundry. Aamir Khan by taking the lead in tackling the social issues could set the agenda for his brethren from the industry to follow and take the lead in addressing various issues that continue to plague our country in spite of more than sixty years of independence. A midterm evaluation of the program indeed would provide an opportunity to test Aamir Khan's popularity vis-a-vis the issues that he is trying to address. Let the truth prevail, SATYAMEV JAYATE.
