Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate has indeed made an impact manifest from the fact that each Sunday the group of professionals wait with trepidation whether they would come under the spotlight. In the very first episode of the programme Aamir Khan had obliquely pointed fingers at the manner in which doctors in the country have left ethics by the wayside and have rather become machines for printing notes, Hippocrates oath be damned.

The third episode that was broadcast yesterday put the medical fraternity under the spotlight, and the clandestine manner in which the profession of medicine has been strangulated by the medical representatives was brought into focus. While the educated elite may be aware about the fact that the medicines prescribed by the doctors are indeed quite high and that they should prescribe the generic medicines which are quite cheap but are not done, as the doctors do not get commission for recommending generic medicines.

It also was shocking statistics to know that we are exporting thousands of crores of generic medicines across the world, but have been rather less than enthusiastic to promote the same throughout the country. What has been done in the case of Rajasthan through the intervention of Cooperative Bank needs to be emulated all over the country.

One needs to understand that for a poor man or even a middle class man, if he or she falls sick, the family undergoes economic recession, but in the zeal to make money professionals associated with the field of medicine are least bothered to work for the benefit and welfare of the poor. But there are shinning beacons like Dr. Devi Shetty of Narayan Hridalaya in Bangalore who have shown through their model that a medical professional can make money but he has to set aside the element of greed.

It is not that the Hindi film fraternity has not highlighted the corrupt practices that the profession of medicine is indulging in, it is just that the manner in which Aamir Khan is highlighting it focusing on the issue for more than a month that is capturing the imagination of the nation.

One aspect with which the programme was started, how when a patient comes into the hospital and he is taken through the byzantine maze of tests and more tests, needed to have been probed further as it has become the bane of medicine profession. May be Aamir Khan needs to do an undercover sting operation to expose the same.

Let's only hope that the initiative that Aamir Khan has undertaken, would lead to some change in situation in the ground level and would ameliorate the travails of the common man. The truth has to win: Satyamev Jayate.
