ENGLISH VINGLISH: What's in a name?

The name of a film in itself is not able to provide the content that is going to be unspooled on the silver screen. It holds true for Sridevi's return film ENGLISH VINGLISH which on the face of it appear as a film that is more an attempt to unplug the nuances associated with speaking English and the levels of discomforts associated with it. The trailers and promos of the film that have been released sort of buttress this point as well.

But there is more to it than meets the eye. ENGLISH VINGLISH is more a film that is shot through and through with emotional undertones and also points to the flaws that have developed in the families these days, as a by-product of on-slaught of technology and the elusive race in which we all have become participants voluntarily or involuntarily. This is probably one of the reasons why the looks that have been given to Sridevi in ENGLISH VINGLISH are more looks that have an element of hesitancy, slight lack of self-confidence, but it is overcome when she dances in the song. ENGLISH VINGLISH seems to hark back to the times of SADMA for Sridevi as in SADMA as well the notion of hesitancy of the character was its underlining motif.

The sense of hesitancy is a by-product of the contours of the present times characterized by the trampling of sensitivities for the sake of personal aggrandizements. The moments of reckoning or personal interpretation of the nuances associated with the English language have been brought out succinctly in the dialogue uttered by Sridevi, why- America is THE USA while India is not The India. It is also a pointer to the existentialist dilemma that a woman faces when she is wedded into a family which is seeped into the English language, while the new entrant is more of a native. This has been one of the favorite themes of Indian cinema and it has been taken to new levels in ENGLISH VINGLISH.

The crux of the message of ENGLSIH VINGLISH lies in the fact that we have to be sensitive, sensitive to the feelings of those with whom we are interacting, as the binding element between a pair of human beings is the ability to be sensitive to the thoughts and processes and take them on the face value and not look for meaning which are not there at all. Sridevi seems to have picked up the film in the form of ENGLISH VINGLISH that could be one of the most successful comebacks in the recent times.
