Challa, Rabbi, Shahrukh Khan, guitar and JAB TAK HAI JAAN

Every film star worth his grain aspires to strum a guitar on the silver screen and belt out numbers that should set the screen on fire and also bring sweet tinkle of cash at the box-office. Shahrukh Khan is also doing it with panache in JAB TAK HAI JAAN, with the song 'Challa', which seems to be an inspiration from the singer Rabbi Shergill's first successful album, 'Bulla kee jaana main kaun'.
The yearn to hold the guitar and sing romantic songs probably is owing to the image that arguably most famous guitar strummer had created. It was Elvis Presley who had made guitar one of the most visible symbols of romance, and Shahrukh Khan had got an opportunity to tune its cousin mandolin in DILWAALE DULHANIYA LE JAENGE, but now that Yash Chopra is hanging his boots as a director, in his last film JAB TAK HAI JAAN, indeed Shahrukh Khan has got a chance to give a boost to his image as a romantic hero, where else but in London, one of the most romantic cities in the recent times, that epitomizes the spirit of romance.
Big B had done it in 'Saara Jamana, Haseeno Ka Dewana', with the film YAARANA. Arguably one of the most romantic heroes of his times, Rishi Kapoor used to belt out the songs playing guitar, but his most successful outing with guitar was in KARZ when he sang 'Om Shanti Om', but undoubtedly the inspiration for the song again was Boss aka Elvis Presley, right from his getup to the mannerisms, a tribute to the image that Elvis Presley had carved for himself of permanence in the minds of the romantics for generations to come.

Probably, this could have been the reference point for Ranbir Kapoor as well when he made his debut with SAAWARIYA, and was shown belting the songs playing guitar, but he could not generate the same kind of euphoria that his father generated with KARZ. Obviously he had to wait for his time and the time did come for him with 'Sadda Haq' and other songs in ROCKSTAR.
The nodes that emanate from the string and rather the whole physical construct of guitar oozes with romance. When one walks with a guitar in his hand or on the shoulders, it conveys the image of a carefree soul, and this was the image that Big B had created in the film MANZIL where he crooned on the screen, 'Tum bhee chalo hum bhee chalein'.
And when one is talking of guitar how can one forget, purani jeans and guitar of Ali Hyder. Which still arguably is one of the most romantic ballets composed underlining the role of guitar in college days, as a medium to communicate romance, to convey a carefree spirit and also to sometimes denote a broken heart as well, ala 'Mere Naina Sawan Bhado' in MEHBOOBA.
One only hopes that 'Challa' makes the same kind of magic for Shahrukh Khan and the song attains a cult status like other guitar songs in the world of Hindi songs.
