PAIRON TALLE: Paradoxes of development unplugged in stark reality

When Mukesh Ambani requests for a personal screening of the film then it indeed is a film which needs to be talked about. The film in question is PAIRON TALLE which tries to unravel the reasons behind the high-crime rates in Delhi NCR and the paradoxes of conflict that happens owing to the struggle between the rural and the urban India, the neo-rich and those who are rich for generations. PAIRON TALLE brings out in succinct detail what has gone wrong in the National Capital Region of Delhi and brings into relief the incidents happening in the NCR region into a context. Development just by demarcating boundaries is not going to happen, until it is undertaken in a holistic manner.

Distributed by PVR's Director's Rare and produced by Divya Bhardwaj, and directed by Sidharth Srinivasan, PAIRON TALLE, is a story of what indeed happens below the feet about which nobody bothers, after all how many amongst us even watch the sole of our feet? The title therefore is an apt metaphor of the situation in which we are presently living. PAIRON TALLE documents the change that is happening in the urban sphere in the metropolitan cities, more so from the perspective of how the traditional landlords after selling off their lands are behaving and using the money so generated. It poses the question whether the cost at which development is happening in urban India is the cost that one should pay to become developed?

PAIRON TALLE has won its praise at all the major international film festivals abroad including those in Toronto and Rotterdam, but it would be interesting to watch whether the Indian audience also accepts and lauds the effort? After all, it underlines the fact that till the time corruption affects us, we are not much concerned, but when we are caught in the onslaught of corruption, all hell breaks loose. It also brings into premise the fact that if a person is downtrodden and is serving the master, the wife of the servant is the property of the master and the master keeps on exploiting her sexually, the husband turn away, again a reality with which the other India continues to struggle. PAIRON TALLE basically is the story of a security guard who is guarding the property in NCR for his master along with his wife, and the landlord physically abuses the wife, presumably as he has given them shelter to stay in NCR-Delhi.

What would however have been a salient feature in the film, which has somehow been overlooked is why is the husband allowing her wife to be exploited and why the wife is also silent, may be it could be to do with the fact that one has got a shelter above the head, and indeed this is one of the facts of angst associated with development. Those at the fringe when they decide to move to the metropolitan cities, indeed have to suffer this kind of torture in one form or the other, but how long would it continue and is this the price to pay for being a part of development? PAIRON TALLE indeed is a reality check.
