Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR takes sports to a different level

Jury may still be out whether the kind of sports that has been featured in STUDENT OF THE YEAR is available to the students per se in the country, but one thing is for sure, STUDENT OF THE YEAR is a film that has been shot through and through with the feeling of sportsmanship, the feeling that sports need to be given priority in the scheme of things that students these days give preference to.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR emphasizes about the fact that all round development of the personality is not possible at all unless the students participate in the sports activities and it is sports which facilitates in developing the spirit of a good human being.

It all started with basketball as sports in KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, where it was the binding element and the element that again brought in the latent love in the hearts and rekindled it. Remember the interaction when Kajol is going away and when Shahrukh Khan is not able to stop her, he tries the ultimate weapon- mere saath basketball kaun khelega? And it was again a basketball match that he used in the end to bring the pair together again.

In the same manner in KAL HO NAA HO basketball was again chosen by Karan Johar as a form of sports to underline the fact that one needs to give priority to sports in life as it provides the platform to interact with the individuals on the basis of the sports acumen and not on the basis of the caste, class and creed that supposedly defines the identity.

May be, as he had been focusing on basketball in his previous films, he must have decided to use all forms of sports in STUDENT OF THE YEAR, be it swimming, cycling, basketball etc., all to underline the point that all round personality can only develop if the students compete in all forms of sports.

With government bringing in legislation in near future whereby a performance of the student would be monitored by awarding marks for his participation in various sports activities, STUDENT OF THE YEAR should serve as the catalyst for the students in the country to start participating in sports activities as well. Time has come to change the maxim kheloge kudoge hoge kharab padhoge likhoge banoge Nawab, to khelo aur padho to banoge Nawab and STUDENT OF THE YEAR indeed would be the catalyst in achieving this objective!
