India mourns Jaspal Bhatti's death

Indian TV viewers, including eminent personalities from different walks of life, mourned the death of actor and political satirist Jaspal Bhatti on Thursday.

Bhatti, 57, died in a road accident that occurred when he was on way to Jalandhar from Bhatinda along with son Jasraj and actress Suril Gautam for promotion of his new film POWER CUT

His car hit a tree and a trawler and he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital where he was rushed. His son and the actress were also wounded in the accident but they survived.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: 'Jaspal Bhatti's demise is unfortunate. He filled our lives with much needed humour. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.'

Social activist turned politician Arvind Kejriwal remarked: 'Jaspal Bhatti was an imp [important] part of anti-corruption struggle. We will all miss him. Also a great loss to the movement. His commitment to anti-corruption movement was amazing. We were together in one tour. He stayed and lived wid us in quite hostile conditions.'

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher tweeted: 'Just Landed in Mumbai and came to know about my friend Jaspal Bhatti's tragic death. Why is God taking away all d nicest people. So SAD.I used to tell Jaspal Bhatti that he does fantastic comedy so seriously. He was also a great supporter of anti corruption campaign. RIP.'

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said: 'To make people laugh is an art & Jaspal Bhatti mastered it. RIP Bhatti ji, may god give strength to your family.'

Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee remarked: 'Part of childhood passes away, Flop Show in DD still so fresh in mind, last week it ws death of romance, ths week laughter, gdbye JaspalBhatti.'

Singer Shreya Ghoshal said: 'R.I.P. Jaspal Bhatti. :(:('

Actress Sophie Choudry tweeted: 'Just drove past the Jaspal Bhatti acting school in Chandigarh. Log chale jaatein hain. Their legacy remains. Tku 4 the laughs! RIP Jaspalji'

Actress Neha Dhupia said: 'Thank you for all the laughs sir ... RIP Jaspal Bhatti Ji.'

Actor Riteish Deshmukh remarked: 'RIP JASPAL BHATTI- one of the first ppl to entertain audience with his political satires. Condolences to the family- a big n untimely loss.'

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar tweeted: 'Saddened to know about the death of the great comedian, Jaspal Bhatti. I have fond memories of his super hit show, Flop Show, providing the much needed humour in our lives. May his soul rest in peace.'

Bhatti is survived by his wife, daughter and the son who also sustained injury.

He was a prominent face in Indian television during the 1980s and 1990s with is satirist shows.

His TV series Flop Show and mini capsules Ulta Pulta that were run on Doordarshan were hugely popular.

Born on March 3, 1955 at Amritsar in a Rajput Sikh family, Bhatti was an electrical engineer after graduating from from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. But his real interest lay in showbiz and satire.

He was a cartoonist for the 'The Tribune newspaper 'in Chandigarh.

His Flop Show series in the early 1990s was produced by wife Savita Bhatti who also acted in all the episodes as his wife.

Bhatti later came up with TV series Ulta Pulta and Nonsense Private Limited for the Doordarshan. Bhatti would spoof every day issues and his subtle humour entertained audience as much as it raised awareness about issues.

Jaspal Bhatti's satire on the Punjab police 'Mahaul Theek Hai' (1999) was his first directorial venture for a full-length feature film in his native Punjabi language. He played the role of Jolly Good Singh, a guard, in the movie FANAA. He played a comical college principal in 'Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe'. He also starred in the comedy Punjabi film JIJAJI.

Bhatti appeared in SAB TV's Comedy ka King Kaun as a judge. In his latest stint, Bhatti and his wife Savita competed in a popular Star Plus show 'Nach Baliye' which went on air in October 2008.

He also later acted in Bollywood movies.

In his later years, Jaspal Bhatti set up a training school and a studio in Mohali near Chandigarh called' Joke Factory'.

He also launched a new 52-episode comedy series titled 'Thank You Jijaji' on Sony's family entertainment channel, SAB TV.

He would spoof inflation and corruption and bureaucracy and attitudes of government officials.
