Emraan Hashmi: I was the most criticized actor

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, fondly known as serial kisser, has come a long way and about to complete a decade in the industry. He started his career with the film FOOTPATH in 2003 which was directed by Vikram Bhatt and now incidentally his upcoming release RAAZ 3 once again brings Emraan and Vikram Bhatt together. However, Emraan reveals that he never had the plans or a distant dream of turning an actor. Emraan finds it quite surprising.

Says Emraan, 'It is a surprising journey. It's been almost accidental that I became an actor as I never wanted to be one,' he further adds, 'It was never my childhood dream to become an actor. I never expected it. In the initial four years of my career, I was not even serious about acting profession, in fact sort of disinterested. I was doing only one type of films and didn't know much about films or what is box-office success or what is the importance of characters. So, I was stereotyped. I can say my career actually began first with JANNAT and then ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. That was a turning point of my career. Then I got serious about my profession. I treated my earlier 4-5 years as warm-up years. Now I am working on films which I really like.'

Prior to JANNAT, Emraan as an actor was never taken seriously. He only received flak for playing bold characters despite his films did fair business at Box-office. According to Emraan, the amount of criticism he withstood in the initial phase of his career no other actor had to go through it. But he never bothered the criticism and followed his own path.

'That was just a phase of my career. By default I was getting offered the same kind of stuff. The amount of criticism I faced in the initial five years of my career I believe no actor must have gone through it...I was the most criticized actor. But I think it's fair enough, critics have their own work to do. We make films some people like it while some people don't. That's their way of looking at it but our work is to not get deterred or affected in any way and continue concentrating on our films.'

Now that Emraan has become most bankable actor of industry with back-to-back successes ask him if he feels that he has reached a position where he can shut his detractors and he says, 'I don't need to do that my work does that for me. People will bad mouth about you but when your film works anyways it shuts up the wagging mouths. And I never think about detractors. In our industry there will always be people who will criticize you, your work, etc. There will always be people who may not like you. That's with every actor. There are people who will stand for you while some others against you. Your relationship has to be with the audience.'

'It's not just a matter of proving but also being part of good films so that audience likes it...I predominantly would like to become a part of films which are liked by major chunk or which appeals to a larger section of audience.'

'It was never the need to prove anything but the need to do different kind of cinema. As an actor you need variety otherwise you'll go mad doing the same stuff. It's in my mental peace that I doing something different,' he adds on a concluding note.
