Anurag Basu: Playing safe is the most unsafe thing

Today Anurag Basu is basking in the glory of accolades coming his way for BARFI!. However it wasn't too long back when he was finding himself in the firing range. His magnum opus KITES couldn't really touch the skies and was one of the most expensive box office debacles on this side of the century. Moreover, his BARFI! too took some time to reach the finishing lines, courtesy constant shooting delays.

The brave-heart that he is, Anurag Basu termed these as minor challenges when compared to the battle he had won with cancer not long ago. However in the world of Bollywood where box-office success decides the course of one's future, Anurag had the task cut out for him.

''He decided not to play safe with BARFI! either, what with his lead protagonists not quite playing quintessential hero and heroine,'' says a close associate of the director, ''With Ranbir going silent and Priyanka enacting the part of an autistic, Anurag was playing nothing short of a gamble. I am sure he must be relieved, now that the gamble has paid off.''

When questioned whether making BARFI! was a brave decision or a well calculated risk, Anurag said, ''You tell me, how does one really classify what really is 'safe'? I feel that playing safe is the most unsafe thing to do. Otherwise why do we see so many so-called quintessential Bollywood flicks failing at the box office?''

He goes on to add, ''It wasn't just after KITES when my friends said the same about making a safe film; even when I made LIFE IN A METRO, I used to keep hearing it all. Still, I went ahead with that film. I am used to hearing such things and for BARFI! it was no different.''

Guess the conviction has paid off finally.
