A student is always supposed to be better than the teacher; the saying goes in our tradition. Well, it seems to have been driven home with conviction with BARFI!, and the student has been able to present the physically challenged persons in a much better manner, obviously with help from the director Anurag Basu. Here the reference point is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali has made two films focusing on differently abled persons, one KHAMOSHI and other BLACK, but in both these films, the focus was more on the handicaps arising out of the disability and the celebration of the handicap was never the focus.

But the student of Bhansali, Ranbir Kapoor has been able to present the physically challenged person in a much more positive manner, as a man who is aware about his disabilities, but he is able to derive strength from them and endears the audience. The title BARFI! is apt in the sense that BARFI! when eaten tends to melt slowly in the mouth and leaves its lingering taste for quite a long time to come, in the same manner the performance in BARFI! indeed leaves a lingering sense of positivity about physically challenged persons quite a long time after the movie has wrapped up.

Anurag Basu has carried forward his innovation of using bands to perform a song or provide background music, as he had done in LIFE IN A METRO and has taken it to new levels in BARFI! where the background music is given on the screen by the music players.

One paradigm shift that Hindi cinema has started practicing is that of underlining the importance of love between individuals and sort of driving home the point that it is a quest that should be strived to be fulfilled even after either of lover has been married to somebody else. This was the theme that Anurag Basu had put into relief in LIFE IN A METRO and he has taken it to new heights in BARFI!, especially in the scene where Ileana D'Cruz confronts her mother about her lover whom she did not marry by chiding her that she still has the yearn in heart for him, but has allowed the material considerations to cover them up. Ileena D'Cruz however decides to walk away from marriage for love that gave her joy, without bothering about the fact that she would succeed or not in the quest that has opted for.

BARFI! is simplicity personified and it is the simplicity which would make it simply easy for the film to make it a success at the box-office.
