Mahesh Bhatt: Salman is at enviable position & its difficult to even touch him

At his career peak, Mahesh Bhatt turns 63 today. Enjoying the biggest commercial success ever in a career spanning four decades, Bhatt saab, as he is fondly called, continues to be as nonchalant as he always has been. Even as RAAZ 3 continues to bring in moolah and birthday wishes keep coming his way, the senior Bhatt maintains that there is a huge disconnect between what audience wants to watch on the big screen versus what critics have to say about films, most recent example being RAAZ 3, which opened to largely mixed reviews. He also insists that none of this really shocks him anymore.

"That's because it is someone's bread and butter to criticize while for us it is to continue making films," he says in a matter of fact tone, "My obituaries were written away way back in the 70s when I had just been born into this world of films. I hadn't even taken baby steps and I was killed off. They said that I was finished. What happened? I am still talking to you today, right?"

He narrates examples of quite a few other members of the industry as well who seemed to have lost favour amongst a select few before they rose like a phoenix.
 
"Look at Salman Khan, weren't his obituaries written four-five years ago? Today he is at such an enviable position that it is difficult for most to even touch him. Same is the case with Emraan Hashmi as well. Poor guy was written off after his very first film. After that even when he was delivering successes, he was not taken seriously. Today he is taking an opening weekend of over 35 crores when so many others are struggling to get even half of that. What does that say? You can't keep down talent and sooner you wake up to that fact, the better. All India audience has a mind of its own, let's not negate that fact," he says.
