Madhur Bhandarkar: HEROINE was never Kareena's story

HEROINE has released and while it is obvious that there are a dozen odd references to some real life Bollywood instances in the film, one wonders whether at any point in time director Madhur Bhandarkar thought of bringing in some real life elements of Kareena Kapoor's life in the narrative as well. However the filmmaker denies taking any such call.

"No, not really," says Madhur after a brief pause, "However one thing that was made sure was to have ample moments where audience may say that 'haan, maine suna hai aisa hota hai'. They may have heard about it from somewhere or read that in newspapers but the idea was to make them relate to the film for sure. As outsiders, they were expected to draw parallels with many real life instances, though not necessarily related to those who feature in the film. As I have always maintained, HEROINE was never Kareena's story or anyone else in particular. It was an amalgamation of Bollywood and Hollywood heroines."

Still, it was much easier for Kareena to draw parallels though, considering the fact that she comes from the first family of Bollywood.

Smiles Madhur, "The best part about Kareena is that she has immense grasping power. She could be glued to her phone but when called for the shot, she would be into it instantly. I have also realised that she is a director's actress and for that you need to be very clear of what you are looking for. To enact such a complex character which is bipolar and at times fragile and at others so loveable, she knew exactly what she was doing."

Well, now that the film is already out in theatres, it is time for audience to pass their verdict.
