OH MY GOD: In the season of festivals an interface with God

Coinciding with the beginning of seasons of festivals in India, as we have bid the elephant god aka Lord Ganesh a fond farewell, comes OMG OH MY GOD! where the God decides to come on to the mother earth to see for himself what is happening in the world and how to set the things right. Akshay Kumar is playing the god, while Paresh Rawal is the common man.

OH MY GOD is adapted from the famous Gujarati play 'Kanjhi viruddh Kanjhi' and has influence of Paresh Rawal's play in Hindi 'Krishan vs Kanhaiya'. While the promos have shown Paresh Rawal as the lead actor, Mithun Chakraborty also has an important role in the film and it could be the surprise package for OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD would also be the debut of popular Kannada actress Nidhi Subbaiah (who will soon be seen as leading lady in AJAB GAZABB LOVE opposite Jackky Bhagnani) into the world of Hindi cinema.

Basically, OH MY GOD is an attempt to instill the faith of the common man in the benign presence of God, and is an attempt of how that faith can be instilled when god decides to take the initiative to do so. In OH MY GOD Paresh Rawal plays the role of an antique dealer who somehow loses the faith in God after a tornado blows away his antique shop. Paresh Rawal becomes cynical and he starts questioning the wisdom and world view that the priests have and to set things right, Akshay Kumar playing the role of Lord Krishna decides to pay a visit. There is a dialogue in the film, "Suit boot mein aaya Kanhaiya meri band bajane ko". Indeed it would be for the first time in the world of Hindi cinema that God is not coming to the humble earth in his divine form, but he is coming up as a smart executive.

OH MY GOD perhaps is an attempt on the part of producer Akshay Kumar to tell his fans that the faith that one loses in the existence of a super power is a by-product of the lack of confidence in the self that happens owing to some untoward incidence and when the individual starts picking up the pieces of his life again, and things starts brightening, his faith starts getting stored. But the moot point is that it is the self-belief and the self confidence that gets manifested in the form of an iconic representation of a God. The scores of temples that are strewn around the country side and the number of festivals in all myriad forms that are celebrated in the country are a pointer about the fact that how much faith we as an individual have in the existence of an entity called God, and how we want him or her to make appearance in our personal lives to correct things that may have gone awry, i.e. when we lose the self-confidence.

The song of the film- 'Go Govinda' starring Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha has already made its mark and has become a chartbuster and one only hopes that for the producer Akshay Kumar coming as he is out from the debacle of JOKER, OH MY GOD turns out to be a hit. It has a good pedigree in the sense that it has been adopted from a successful play and one only hopes that Paresh Rawal and Mithun Chakraborty would be able to carry it off.
