Bollywood divas of the past rising like phoenix to strike back

Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit had bowed out gracefully more than a decade ago after ruling over the box office, but when they announced their intentions to grace the spotlight once again a wave of anticipation started building up for them amongst the fans. Sridevi's test to underline her sojourn at the box office is just a few days ahead, what with ENGLISH VINGLISH releasing this Friday. If the reports from USA are to be believed, she has made waves through her comeback movie ENGLISH VINGLISH outside India, and it would be seen with interest, whether she is able to achieve same results again. But the moot point is that the sheer fact that Sridevi was making a comeback made the audiences swoon in anticipation.

Same is the case with Madhuri Dixit, who already is making the fans eat out of her elfin charm through the dance show JHALAK DIKHLAJA and is reportedly charging Rs. 1 crore per episode. The moot point is that if she is able to command this kind of remuneration after such a long gap, it is a clear pointer to the status that she enjoyed at the box office along with Sridevi. Ranbir Kapoor when he had appeared in one of the episodes to promote BARFI! was moon eyed and expressed rather sheepishly his unfulfilled desire of dancing with Madhuri. And when Madhuri had condescended, Ranbir Kapoor was literally over the moon.

Can such kind of charisma and aura be exercised by the female actresses of the present times? A tough question to ask, as none of the stars of the present times has such a charm that the fans or the audience cannot control their eyes popping out when they see them face-to-face in the public through some kind of television shows.

The stars of an era gone by of the likes of Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit or for that matter a Hema Malini or a Rekha continue to maintain the grace and the charisma, which they leveraged to rule at the box office. The female stars of the present times however do not enjoy the same longevity but for a Kajol, who still weaves magic whenever she dazzles on the screen. It is probably owing to the fact that they are getting the roles which gives them the latitude only to dance in a song, and show some skin, but does not allow to emote.

May be the roles are not being written for them in same meaty proportions as it used to happen in case of a Sridevi, a Madhuri Dixit or a Kajol. The jury is out whether given the roles the film stars of the present times can perform to the same levels. Well, Parineeti Chopra, and Anushka Sharma have shown that they indeed can, so the writers have to take a call, if they want to create a new generation of divas who would rule the hearts of the fans a decade down the line.
