Riteish Deshmukh's BALAK PALAK deals with adolescent curiosity about sex

When Riteish Deshmukh decided to become a producer, obviously his comfort zone would be in his native language, Marathi, but he was perhaps intelligent enough not to initiate the process through a raunchy comedy but through a sensitive film BALAK PALAK that has an ensemble Marathi star cast. BALAK PALAK is a film that tries to address the issue of growing pang of teenagers and underlines the importance of sex education for the teens of the present times who do not have answers and are more susceptible to distraction through the sleaze permeating the cyber world.

Directed by Ravi Jadhav, BALAK PALAK is an outcome of the questions that his 13 year son raised to him about the issues pertaining to adulthood, and his levels of discomfort in providing an answer to these questions owing to the manner in which such issues are handled in our society. Jadhav is one of the accomplished directors of Marathi cinema having directed BAL GANDHARV and NATARANG.

Issues of sex especially teenage sex have seldom been addressed in the world of Indian cinema, and wherever it has been delved upon, it has been done in a rather clandestine manner, the most celebrated such scene that immediately popping up in the mind is that of MERA NAAM JOKER where a teenage Rishi Kapoor at the cusp of adulthood is shown watching Simi Garewal bathing in semi-nude and the concomitant effect of the scene on him.

The whole idea of BALAK PALAK is to encourage the parents to start providing answers to the queries that children raise about the opposite sex, and if they are uncomfortable in providing the answers, at least help them with good references so that they are not misguided. As a matter of fact the tagline of BALAK PALAK- IT IS TIME TO TALK, underlines the importance of the issue, or rather the urgency of the situation that parents have to understand.

BALAK PALAK also underlines the fact that the situation has to be dealt in a delicate manner and not academically i.e. one has to converse on the subject and educate and not shy away. The film going to be released next month has scenes which show the awkwardness of children in trying to get a blue film from a video shop as their queries are not answered from any source.

One only hopes that Riteish Deshmukh would release the film in Hindi as well, as the subject matter has a lot of topicality.
